I got this very nice opportunity.. and now I have to send them the references, however I ran into a wall

The boss for whom I worked for over 2 years ago moved to another state, and I have no way of reaching him. How can I provide references concerning that job position?

I have co-workers that are now promotted to managerial positions, would that be sufficient

Is there anyone else at that company that could be your reference? Your boss's boss? Colleague?

That's my problem as well. Since I do alot of computer contract jobs most of the people I've worked with are no longer at the company. I just tell them straight up they'll have a hard time finding them.

Yep, I think so. I had the same thing happen.. (well my boss hit on me then got angry when I wasn't interested) ...so I used a co-worker for a reference. Haven't had any issues.

Try to pick someone that knows your abilities the best, incase they get asked some detailed questions by the interviewer.

Seashell.. do you remmeber any details from what your future employer asked your co-worker? How extensive is that phone interview?

Revex: I think it will totally depend on the interviewer, I've had some that never bothered to call any of my references, others that asked a few questions like:

- do they get along well in a team environment?
- were they on time arriving and leaving work?
- were they a leader within the group?

Things like that. They might also ask about things on your resume, ie. a particular project or task you worked on. But I'm sure if you tell them that your primary reference is no longer with the company, they won't expect that the other person "filling in" knows every little detail about what you did there.
