New Jersey is one weirdo state with some fucked gun laws. I'd check www.packing.org
I don't believe so. They have a law last I heard that can get you landed in jail as a felon for having a bullet in your pocket. I would definietly check the local laws. It may be legal as far as the Feds are concerned, but the states can always have stricter laws.

Also check with your local gun club or shooting range. Most of them have really good information about that.

You may bring a handgun into NJ under these circumstances:
(1) To go target shooting for the day, with friends, or by oneself. That presumes acting within the law. Gun locked in box in trunk, ammo locked separate. If the vehicle lacks a trunk, gun locked up and ammo also locked up. Only a direct route to the place of shooting and back to your home. Don't wander around, or linger with the gun in the trunk.

From what I recall, a good rule of thumb is that access to the gun and it's amunition should not be in the same single action. Like both locked in the trunk next to one another. Have one locked in the trunk, preferrably the gun and the ammo locked in the glove box. Different states have different laws about how that gets implemented, but the primary concern was for the saftey of LE.
If you are pulled over and your ammunition or gun is in the same place your license and registration is, keep your hands on the wheel and inform the officer of the situation. I'd hate to hear about you having any unwanted holes in you.

jersey has some f'ed up laws.
i need to check what states my permit is good in besides PA. it'd be nice to cross state lines w/out having to unload.

Good advice from everyone. Its alway best to check with state laws, for the one's you will be passing into our through. They vary so much.

everything good is forbidden in new jersey and california.
guy i knew that lived in cali was over in AZ. he stopped in at a gun shop and wanted to see an assault rifle. the guy was about to remove it from the display case, but then stopped and asked for ID. when the clerk saw he was from cali, he told him he wasn't even allowed to HOLD it!
on the side, however, he gave him a recommendation if he wanted to purchase firearms in AZ. get a PO Box and then an Arizona driver's license. problem solved til you get back into cali.

Yes, ammo expires, but it varies depending on the humidity and temperature you keep it at, and it takes a few years even in 110 degrees at high humidity. When it expires it actually becomes very dangerous since the gunpowder burns faster. It tends to explode inside your gun. If you keep it in the house in a cool dry place 20+ year old ammo is still safe.
