Depends on how you define "decent."

Brand name recommendations can be deceptive, because I can't think of a simgle manufacturer that doesn't have some clunkers somewhere in their acoustic guitar model lineup.

For a cheap 'n cheerful entry-level acoustic, I'd look at Seagull or Tacoma. Martin, considered by many to be the sort of gold standard of acoustic guitars, has some budget models that are decent too. Other brands are hard to give a blanket endorsement -- Epiphone has some decent low-price acoustics, and some nasty ones too. Same for Takamine and Yamaha. Taylor's got a decent budget instrument, if you get a good one.

Do you play? If so, go to a store and just pick up some of the guitars in your price range. If you don't play, try to find a friend who can go to the store with you.

much thnx db bump for ya, no i dont play ive always loved acoustic music so i decided im gonna get one and learn. I have friends who play, and one who specifically said he would teach me how to play, but he knows regular guitars a lot better than acoustic, and he said he doesnt really know any main brands for mainly acoustic, so i come to you guys heh, anyway like i said thanks again, any other comments are appreciated

check your local recycler... i just got a used taylor acoustic/elec for 600... retail 3k guitar... On the hunt for a 77'ish LP custom in any variation of white.

Oh, you want to be Rumours-era Lindsey Buckingham? :D

um i dont wanna spend to much since im just learnin right now, actually ive been doin some research and gettin opinions and im looking into buying a takamine, looking to spend only about 300 dollars. I heard I can get a decent one to learn on for that, one that should last a while. I also have a friend who has a takamine and he says his is great. Anybody else have any experiences with them?

Takamine makes some decent instruments, and some dogs. The electric/acoustic Takamines always have good-sounding pickups when you plug into a sound system though.

If you are just starting out and just learning, then it doesn't really matter. Buy a cheap used one and just make sure that you even want to keep trying to play. No sense burning a load of cash on something that may end up collecting dust in your closet. If you are serious though and really want to get a good ax, I would personally go with a Taylor or a Martin.

Musicians are flakes. ;)

Did you hear about the bass player who locked his keys in the van?

It took him an hour to get the drummer out.

1) Check out the body. Look for imperfections. If there's imperfections youc an see visibly, there's probably imperfections in other places.

2) Check the tuners. They're IMPORTANT. nothing is worse then strumming with feeling and strings goint out of tune. Play the fuk of that thing and then make sure it still stays exactly right.

3) Look for dents.

4) Heard the resonance of the sound. Does it amplify well? Play in a SILENT room and really listen to it. Does it feel warm and beautiful? EVERY acoustic sounds a bit different.

5) Get electric with pickups and switches. So you can plug into a board or amp sometimes to get different effects.

6) Check the glossiness, color, etc. Make sure it's not faded etc.

Unlike electrics which can be modified to kingdome come -- acoustics are all about the sound. Just play it, make sure it feels right, tunes right, looks right and just get it. There's not much other science to it. I've seen $500 ones that sound way better and feel better than $2000 ones.

thanks a lot to everyone who responded, im still lookin into it, and all this talk is just increasing my appetite for one, but I dont wanna do this rashly. Im looking into everything, and i think soon enough i will have one. Until then i cant wait. I found a jasmine-takamine for about 150 that plays well (or atleast as well as i can say w/o really ever having played one) and feels great. My friend has the same one and he says it can take a bit of abuse, and it still sounds good. Any more posts are greatly appreciated
BTW: I have to say the guitar posted by y lifter is far and away the best guitar ive ever seen...ill dream about it until the day i can save the 15 dollars and get it x-)-
