Ok.. any tricks to learning? I know it is just practice practice and i think it is fun.

What was the 1st thing you learned? Just basic chords
like C D G did you just go back and forth and play these? till ya got it..

any tips would be great.. hook a brotha up..

or any books video or anything that are helpful.

i just started learning guitar a couple years ago myself, and a few websites that helped me were:

Chordfind
Ultimate Guitar

what I did was find a couple easy songs that I liked on ultimate guitar, use chordfind to figure out how to play the chords, then just practiced until my fingers hurt too much

oh yea the ultimate guitar website is all Tabs... if you dont know what Tabs are, search it on google... it makes finding songs you like and learning to play them waaay easier

good luck man, guitar is awesome!

get a lesson 2 times a month and practice practice practice

get technique and form down early, its hard to undo bad habits once you've perfected them.

that is kinda what i am worried about learning bad form ..

Although this is not always the case, most people I know who are truly good at the guitar picked up the instrument very quickly, it just came to them.

To start out, learn the usual campfire/cowboy chords and figure out how to assemble them into songs. If, in the process of noodling around, you also happen to figure out some lead lines, then run with it. In my opinion, the way to maintain interest as a beginner is to be able to entertain yourself with it.

What I did was find a song you'd like to learn, some simple three chord progression, and just play it until you can make each chord transition fluidly. It'll take a while to just get each chord by itself to sound clearly, but if you have a song to focus on it helps drive you.

The first song I learned was Tom Petty's Swingin.

Here's a site to help with all you guitar needs and desires-

recommend starting off with a few lessons to get the basics and so the instructor can point out your bad habits

after that you can explore whatever type of music your into and learn the different techniques that come with each style, you'll pick it up as you go along, practice.....i can sit with a guitar and go into my own world for hours

yeah man, chords, and do exercises. lean simple songs to get the basics down- songs with easy chord transitions and power chords. heres a good exercise to build up finger dexterity:

low e string:

frets:

3,4,5,6 and just go 3 first finger, 4 2nd finger , 5th.. etc etc
finger 3 with your first, as you lift it, finger 4 with your 2nd and till you get to 6. then repeat. repeat, repeat repeat repeat. do this for all the strings. id do that for all 6 strings as warmup for about 30 -45 mins alone, then get the chords and stuff down. you can also do this up and down the fret board. i believe this is one of the best little exercises ever! oh and lessons! like lestat said 2x a month should be sufficient. get those chords down man, those are the bread and butter. its boring at the beggining cuz you see guy slike vai, and malmsteen tear it up, but they all started with chords too. id try to aim for like 5 new chords per weak, manage to transition through them with ease, and like 1 new song every week- a song that suits your skill lvl ofcourse. starting out, i hate to say it, but id recommend green day or blink... you cant start off with avenged sevenfold just yet. good luck!

oh sry! i forgot when you do that exercise, as you press down on 3rd with your index finger, be sure to pick the string as well. then 4th fret with your 2nd finger, pick the string, and etc and etc. its quite simple but it works. now that we have guitar players in here, you guys should check out: www.avengedsevenfold.com/cityofevil and stream side winder or the wicked end. amazing solos.

If you can't play Kirk Hammett's riff at the end of One immediately, you might as well give up. It isn't meant to be.

no.. i wont be giving up. thanks though even if it doesn't come to be right away most things dont I am usually a slow learner. but once i catch on (its on) ;)

oh yea lestat made a good point... lessons at the start are probably a good idea

but what happened to me was I took lessons, and learning guitar became a chore, so i said fuck that and quit it. I took 3 years off of it, then started to play because I love creating music... I got better within a month than i had in the 6 months i took lessons.. but on the bright side, I probably avoided some bad habits i would have otherwise picked up

That was actually really funny, Frisk.

nope...none...

Picked it up very infrequently.....just decided to MAKE time fot it - like I do the gym

Okay, step #1:

Learn how to tune the guitar.

Step #2:

Learn how to change strings.

Step #3:

Learn the G, C, E, A, and D major chords in the first position. Then learn how to make each one into a minor chord and a 7th chord.

Now, play "Michael Row Your Boat Ashore" over and over and over again.

When you master the guitar -- you realize quickly that ther eis only 12 freakin' notes.

You can arrange those notes and sounds to make any "style" of music possible.

During the learning phase during Doug Marks course you learn all the essentials to do anything. Fast fingering, tapping, solo'ing, whammy bar, theory, composition, bends, pull-offs, whole enchilada.

After that -- you can play slayer, emo or use what you have learned to go onto more complex stuff (jazz, classical).

Damn, that sounds good. I know there's only 12 notes but there's nearly infinite combinations and almost as many scales to play with that each fit into a respective style. I don't even play enough to delve into many, it's fun to simply mess around and find new stuff though.
