Lately I have been grinding my own flax seeds for my morning shake but I have some concerns, namely:
1) Flax seed oil from a reputable ditributor is kept cold and the date pressed is stamped on the bottle. I never buy anything more than about 45 days old and I keep it in the freezer. With flax seeds on the other hand you have no idea when they were harvested, and they are not kep refrigerated.
2)When I grind up the seeds in my coffee grinder the resulting meal/butter gets quite hot, almost too hot to touch.
3)The EFAs in flax are very sensitive to oxygen, age, and heat.
4)Flax seed oil now comes with particulate matter
5)Flax seed oil is a more concentrated form of the all-important Omega-3s
These three factors would seem to weigh against the seeds.
2 factors in favor of seeds:
1) The oil in the seeds is encapulated from oxygen until grinding, which happens immediately before consumption. (not positive about this one)
2) They are cheaper.
Basically after considering these factors I think the ones in favor of the oil outweigh the ones in favor of the seeds. But I would like to hear people's input.
