suprises me you went w/ cornell as # 2 (although I do love him)

i gotta go with (got weird taste and depending on your definition of "singer")

1. James Maynard (tool, a perfect circle)

2. Layne Staley (alice in chains, mad season)

3. Ben Harper

4. Curt Cobain

5. Neal Young (haha)

Lol. I gotta throw a special shoutout too for the dude from Steelheart(Michael Matijevic). If you saw the movie "Rock Star" with Marc Walburg, he was "the voice". He can wail too. He loses points for crappy music though.

The one the only air raid siren: Bruce Dickinson

Bruce's voice on Number is amazing. The head tones on Hallowed give me chills, still, to this day.

Baz is a friend of my ex. They knew each other from back in his bar band days. Cool guy. Got us VIP seats when they were on tour with Bon Jovi. Great singer, no doubt.

I am a huge Geoff Tate fan from way back to.

Klaus is another good vocalist.

Dio has a good voice as well.

Yeah, Steve Perry is an amazing technical singer. Lot of soul to that boy. One of my fav's.

Lot's of great singers from the old days.

Too bad much of modern music requires that you sing like crap and play your instrument like a novice.

Haven't looked at the list, but I'll give #1 to Paul Rodgers of Free and Bad Company.

we're not supposed to like these guys, for whatever reason, but lou gramm and steve perry have amazing rock voices. chris cornell, kurt cobain, and (just can't think of his name this early) the lead singer of pearl jam are incredible. michael stipe has a beautiful voice.

WORD

1) Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth. No one can touch his voice, IMO.
2) Maynard James Keenan of Tool/APC.
3) I'll always love James Hetfield's voice too.
4) I'll probably get shit for this, but I like Corey Taylor's (from Slipknot/Stone Sour)voice.
5) Chris Volz of Flaw.

Other notables:
6) Chuck Billy of Testament
7) Lajon Witherspoon of Sevendust.

I think that virtuosity for the sake of virtuosity is overrated.

Technical ability without musicality is an exercise of ego.

I agree 100%.

It's the blend of both that makes some of the most beautiful music we are capable of producing.

My two all time favorite singers would have to be Paul Rodgers and Glenn Hughes. For those of you who don't know who Glenn Hughes is..Listen to the song "Burn" by Deep Purple. Then I would rate these others as my favorites.

Rob Halford (Judas Priest)
Phil Mogg (UFO)
Geoff Tate (Queensryche)
Ronnie James Dio (Dio)
Tony Martin (Black Sabbath)

Well, since he put metal singers and ordinairy rockers together on that list, I don't think it should count. I totally agree with the Choice of Chris Cornell, who has an amazing voice(listen to the songs ; last remaining light, and like a stone, from the Audioslave album). But what the hell is Mick Jagger doing among the top 100 singers!?

We should really make our own list here, or a poll.

I thought that's what we were doing.

Geoff Tate of Queensryche
Matt Barlow of Iced Earth
Maynard James Keenan from Tool/Perfect Circle
Chris Cornell of Audioslave
Chris Volz of Flaw
Lajon Witherspoon of Sevendust
Ed Kowalczyk of Live
Max Illedge of 40 Below Summer

OK so more than 5, but I thought all deserved to be mentioned. These would be in my top ten. But if I have to do away with personal bias of which bands I like, and go just by vocal talent, I'd still have to put Tate, Keenan, Cornell, and Barlow in the top 5.

Mark Moots from December. That man's screaming range is incredible.

Jesse Leach until he sang out his voice just because he was a great screamer and a great singer.

I should've included Jesse Leach in my list too. I think he shined most when he was singing and not screaming, although he could definitely scream too.

I look for versatility when it comes to singers; guys that can scream their lungs out and sing all in the same breath.

Someone mentioned Mikael Akerfeldt, that's pretty dead on there. His clean vocals are bar none some of the finest in metal, and he has a great death metal growl like the stuff he did for Bloodbath.

People don't give Phil Anselmo enough credit. That guy was great on both sides of the coin when he wanted to be.

Barney Greenway's voice is about as pummeling as things get. Plague Rages is a pretty intimidating vocal display of aggression.

Jon Michael Gioe from Majhas shouldn't have vocal chords after recording Stepping into Character. Talk about putting your all into your screaming. Same goes for Josh when he was in Norma Jean, I'm surprised that guy doesn't pass out when he yells.

Tim "Trim Swinger" Singer puts so much of himself in his vocal work. He always makes for a cathartic listen. Too bad Kiss it Goodbye never made it past their debut.

Of course, I have to give it up for my man Daryl Palumbo who can go psycho at the drop of a dime. I've never heard someone go as crazy as he does on Siberian Kiss.

Anneke Van Giersbergen might be the only chick in metal I can tolerate vocally, she always puts forth some fine, more classically aligned stuff.

To switch up speeds, I don't know if people consider him to be rock, but when he was alive, Jeff Buckley had the best male vocals in music. Truly haunting.

I respect guys that can sing (King Diamond, Bruce Dickinson, Geoff Tate etc) but screaming is just so much more taxing on the body. A lot of people can learn to be great singers, but not everyone can learn to scream with the right tone. But, then, I grew up with death metal, so I'm biased.
