Got squished benching

Did one rep too many on the bench yesterday and my triple turned into a 2.5 as the bar got stuck on my sticking point. I worked the bar down my chest and tipped it to the side to crawl out. Just as I'm about half-way out from underneath and have the bar balanced on the bench, some guy rushes over and lifts one side. This, of course, throws me completely off balance and dumps me on my backside. I thanked him for his help and told him to leave it.

After taking 15lbs off the bar I'm back underneath it and pressing nicely. As the bar slows down again for my sticking point another guy rushes over to spot me. I'm there squeezing out my rep and bellowing "Leave It!".

Not sure what the moral of the story is. Just another day at the gym.

No spotter is better than a bad spotter

No, the moral of the story is to always have a spotter when benching or squatting. You can easily get injured w.out one when moving heavy weights. If you have a specific preference to how you like to spot (eg. you want the spotter to help as minimally as possible on the last rep), tell him beforehand.

Too right! Better to get squished than let someone else take credit for the rep. :)

Yep it's a fine line. The first thing someone says to their spotter is 'how much did you help?' (BTW, 50% is usually not the answer you want to hear ;) )

:FRlol: @ bellowing. I was bellowed at once except for the opposite reason. This guy asked me for a spot on 315 and since he was easily getting the reps I had my hands ready but not under the bar. Well he bellows at me 'Hands on the bar!'. So I put them under the bar but not touching. I think that infuriated him so he yells at me 'HANDS ON THE BAR!' So I grip the bar like I'm doing some kind of sideways upright row and that made him happy.

I mean I figure if he can bellow at me he's got enough strength to the the reps :)

EDIT: I'm glad you're not hurt too ;)

You are, of course, completely correct and I was not sensible to attempt a triple I had any doubts about without a spotter. I think the squats prior had taken too much out of me.

On the upside, I now know that I can take 315 comfortably on my chest without getting crushed. I wouldn't want to finish every session like that but so long as I keep my chest inflated I can expect to survive.

Thanks to everyone who's glad I'm not hurt.

Happens to the best of us...mostly during that crucial first year of training though. Now I get a spotter for the heavy sets and tell him to keep his hands off the bar until I fail.

i never get spotted on squats. some dudes are too anxious to get right in there, you know? anyway, it's cuz some dick went and got the buckle of his belt stuck on the back of my belt. ultra geigh looking scene there.........

True. I do biceps and forearms along with triceps. Biceps first, then forearms, and then immediately afterwards I hit up close grip bench. 2x now in the past 4 months I have dropped 315 after unracking it for closegrip, due to my forearms and grip giving out. Lemme tell you, you hear that 315 crash down on the pins and you damn near wet yourself.

Gotta be more careful bro, but I'm glad you're ok :)
