Got into trouble by not training calves ???

Somehow, I stopped training calves a few months ago.... got so into my routine (5x5) that I neglected them...

Now when I try to run or even walk fast, my shin swell up like they are going to pop. and I have to stop.

Could this be the reason... could this be shin splints?

Not the reason. Most runners - even elite ones - don't train anything ever.

Might be your shoes or the way you walk. Suck it up?

maybe you should read about shin splints, if you say 'suck it up'... There is no sucking it up. They just stop working.

Shoes are new, mizuno, made to correct pronation.

I have shin splints - but what a shin splint differs a lot and what resolves them also varies. From your description, I'd say you need to run more.

I too get that kind of shin splint. I mostly get it when I havent' run for a few days. The way that I have always gotten rid of them was to grind them out.

So try sucking it up. For me, I usually get them around mile 3 and they are gone by mile 5-6.

It's probably not that. It is probably that your anterior tibialis ("shin muscle") is weak. Do some research and find exercises that will strengthen it.

Did you also stop or change forms of cardio during the 5x5?

If you suck it up, it will get better. Seriously....that does sound harsh, but the muscle is weak - strengthen it, either through exercises or more running/fast walking and it will go away. Really. :)
