Could Microcrap's days be numbered? They must be shaking in their boots. And GOOD F'N RIDDANCE to crappy operating systems and bloated overpriced software.

NYT: Google to introduce PC operating system - The New York Times- msnbc.com

SAN FRANCISCO - In a direct challenge to Microsoft, Google is expected to announce on Wednesday that it is developing an operating system for a personal computer based on its Chrome browser, according to two people briefed on Google’s plans.

wait till.....oh my bad. Several distro's of Linux that are immeasureably superior to Windows have been out for years. Totally free to d/l and novice level to use. You guys live under rocks? Ubuntu 9.04 runs my HP laptop better than XP did.

it wont fly....ms os is way too deeply rooted and used by too many business and people are not going to learn to use 2 different os (one for work and one for home)...Linuxhas been out forever and it is no where near mainstream.

commercially available on disk for maybe 10 years, as opposed to Windows' 15 years. Until very recently Linux distros weren't friendly to most (read: novice) users, and didn't bundle much if any crossplatform programs. Now you can get all that, for free. You can even get laptops preloaded with it now. It's market share is accelerating significantly as people are realizing this.

Anyone trying to sell an OS to compete with Windows though is gonna have an extraordinarily tough time though.

yeah but think about how many people use ms os and ms office at work??

even if something is free they will not take the time to learn 2 os.

Linux is a superior operating system by far. The problem is the dearth of specialized business programs that run on it. Nothing like the CRM database we use is available on Linux and I'm sure most large businesses have several apps that fall into the same category. I've been using Linux exclusively at home for 3 years now and I still need Windows for my training/power meter software.

Besides, browser based OS's have been tried before and nobody HAS STILL ever gotten fired for recommending Microsoft.

good, the OS market was almost a monopoly. Google has the clout to move into the business OS market. I don't think microsofts products are terrible, I just theink they're overpriced. A basic OS shouldn't be almost $200 or more when they intitially come out.

I'm curious to see if any of the new OS's can compete in the computer games market. That would be a big deal for me. When I get my next computer I will likely have to have a DX10 compatible system to play the top games.

Yeah but this is google. They make take 20 years but they'll overtake ms eventuallyu/ Remember this companyu's only been around a few years and look how much it's accomplished???

When it can run as many programs as Windows and as well on my desktop, I'll take notice. Not to mention it needs to be able to run Crysis as well.

These.

Assuming Mac hasn't taken over the home market by then. And another Vista style o/s will practialy ensure that.

It will take a collossal fuckup on Microsoft's part and then some to ensure that. Much more than another Vista. Vista was just all around bad planning. In the meantime all the important nerds in the world still use PC's and will continue to do so until Macs offer more than just flashy looks and proprietary hardware. Oh and a good video editor.

90% of home users just surf the web now. A $500 Mac/Google computer that does web, email, games and word processing can easily destroy the home pc market. There are 100 non-geeks to every geek out there. And many of these geeks use mac or linux anwyways. In Hollywood, it's all mac. Same in san fran.

Give google 20 years to get their nukes ready and add in china/india hardware manuf's and perhaps a apple collaboration to put the frosting on the cake.

By that time they'll all be in the same boat. MS, Apple, Google, etc it won't make much of a difference the way things are going.

Yeah, Mac's on the verge of taking over, they've got, what, 8% of the market?

What % of the cell phone market did apple have 5 years ago? How many were at your best buy 4 years ago?

Steve Jobs has cancer, let's see how Apple does when their head visionary croaks.

Likely the idea would be to convert businesses over to that OS anyway...then they can really take over the home market.

We're going to send someone in to replace your current OS, it will cause WAY less problems and we'll even give all your staff lessons on how to use it. We used to do it all the time in the photocopier game and it worked very well.

Chrome OS is a stripped down version of Linux that runs in a browser, so if your internet connection goes down you're toast. We've been down the netbook road before with Sun Microsystems "Sun Ray". The people spoke loudly and quickly with "I want all my shit on my computer actually in my grubby hands, k plz thx!".

Steve Jobs is the cancer for Apple, anyone will tel you that. He's the #1 reason apple hasn't blown MS out of the water. Since MS copied apple and essentially bitch slapped them by becoming #1 and Jobs just sat there.

A new Bill Gates will arise within the next 20 years and blow MS out of the water. Once people realize MS is vulernable and their dominance in question - everyone will attack.

Remember when people though myspace was impervious and will be the biggest website on earth for years? Makingh Fox spend an ungodly amount to buy it. It lasted what 4 years before layinmg off people because it never turned a profit? lol.

MS copied Apple?

Uh, they both copied Xerox PARC's SmallTalk.

Also why cloud-based digital distribution services like OnLive will never dominate.
