Good Tricep Exercises Without Pushdowns???

Texas Ranger

New member
What exercises do you do at home to REALLY hit the Triceps hard? I'm thinking Close Grip Benches, Dips(Weighted), Lying Tricep Extensions, and Overhead DB Extensions. Did I miss anymore?? Also, what are some of your Tricep routines?? Just looking for some input and ideas...

your right..close-grip benches, db tricep extensions, jm presses, lockouts, close-grip pin presses, wide-grip pin presses, 5 & 6 board presses, and....one-arm tricep presses. tb

forgive my ignorance but whats wrong with pushdowns? esp. with rope where u also push outward? i just wanna know why theyre bad thnx

When you get pretty heavy, they really tend to hurt your elbows. I've had a run-in with inflammation & pain in both elbows before.

Hes training at home, so probabally doesnt have access to them. I like them as a warm-up before hitting the heavy freeweight skull crushes and standing extentions, also like to go heavy on them.

The above list is great, but what I've done lately is wrap 2 mini bands on the top of my power rack and do 1 arm pressdowns with a neutral grip, holding and squeezing at lockout. I think that move is responsible for my rack lockouts going way up.

Lavi, nothing's wrong with them. I used to do them myself as a warm up before hitting Tricep Extensions(Lying & Overhead) and Dips(Weighted) when I worked out in a commercial gym.

close floor press, close bench, JM press, lying tri extension

Some fantastic choices are listed here. It's freaky, but there seem to be TONS of good exercises for the triceps.

I haven't tried them yet, but I hear reverse-grip bench presses are also golden. Some very big and strong bodybuilders I've known swear by 'em.

Nothing, IMO gets your tri's stronger than Skull crushers. I did skull crushers alone for Tri's for about one year straight, and my tri's were STRONG as FUCK. Since I tried mixing it up, and doing different stuff and not focusing as much on crushers.....my tri strength dropped tremendously. Skull crushers are the ultimate IMO.

Can someone define skull crusher for me? I've always thought they were done with dumbbells starting perpendicular to the floor, but I've also heard of using a barbell with a similar motion, but palms starting facing the celing. which is which?

Reverse-grip bench press is great, but it can be hard to do. It is pretty hard on your wrist, and when you get heavy, i can be hard to hold it with the bar rolling out of your hands. I have almost dropped the bar on myself a few times and for that reason I dont really do them anymore.
