Good Sci-Fi books. Any recommendations?

I know there must be some sci-fi fanatics around here. ;) I'm in the mood for a good sci-fi read. What're some good titles a novice like myself might want to start off with? Maybe some classics. And what are they about?

P.S. I've missed posting around here! There are tons of names I don't even recognize...

"Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" is an excellent read.

lol, i cant spell it too, isaac asminov?!? either way, he has this series about robots (not just about robots but they feature heavily), either way it talks about what kinda 'robocop' laws they will have to obey (i.e. never hurt a human etc)

Ringworld -- Lary Niven

And although they're not really Sci-Fi...

Jurassic Park, and Prey by Michael Crichton.

I really liked the Star Trek: Next Gen series...but thats more like good fun reading, not necessarily, like, a wonderful novel. If you haven't read Brave New World, you gotta. Its great!

Thanks guys! I'll have to look these up. I've actually even read a few of these so I don't feel so out of touch after all.

I loved Brave New World. It was one of the few mandatory readings for school that I actually enjoyed.

bwood....I'm not even going to touch that one...;)
