Good Mornings - Lower Back Concern

Tom Treutlein

When doing good mornings for my second time today (did them last week also), I found that my lower back starts to get really tense, and almost feel like there were nerves being pinched. I know when using heavier weights for box squats and such, the pain towards the middle portion of the back is just the stabilizer muscles getting adjusted to the heavier weight. In fact, that mid-back pain no longer exists.

I'm wondering if anyone else who does gms has the same pain, and if so, is this a dangerous sign and should I stay away from them so as not to risk back injury? Or does everyone have this at first?

do you sit waaaay back into it? that should help.
im actually feeling some residual pain from doing GM'S today. my form slipped slightly on a PR, so that'll teach me. plus i was slightly tired still from doing seated GM's a week ago.

I've never got any pain from GM's. I keep my back arched, abs tight, and knees slightly bent.

"do you sit waaaay back into it? that should help. "
Without looking at your form to see if anything else might be wrong,I agree with Bignate. When I first started doing these I thought you were just supposed to bend over-wrong.The movement sort of reminds me of how a scissor lift looks as it is moving up and down....the center hinge area(your waist) goes back, while the top and bottom hinge area(your feet and head)stay in line with each other.

Towards the end of yesterday's workout I started to actually "sit" into them more. Though, it's not like squats where you actually sit. I tried just pushing my ass towards the wall to my back. I don't see how one can keep the head and feet in line though...

You are right...your head and feet dont stay in line(it was kind of a bad example, but the best I could think of)"I tried just pushing my ass towards the wall to my back"...that is a better explanation.I think of doing that, instead of thinking of bending over.
