Gonna adopt this dog....

75th

My wife and I volunteer at a dog adoption center sporadically. We recently came across Red, a pit bull. Apparently, some douchebags came by to rob his owners house - they knew he owned a pit - so the brought a gun and shot the poor guy. Paralyzed his hind legs. Apparently he's been at the shelter for almost 2 years and, understandably, there's not a line of people who want to take him in.

Thinking we'll pick him up this weekend. Been spending a good amount of time with him over the past few months. Just feels like something we should do.

Red - PAWS Chicago – Chicago's largest No Kill humane and adoption organization

Aww, do it! I think I saw him on Pets with Disabilities website, too. It's a wonderful thing to adopt a special needs doggy/ animal.

aw :(

you're the man. i don't care for pits, i think they're vicious creatures for the most part and are responsible for the deaths of many other people's pets. i know several people that lost an animal to a pitbull attack

but this poor little guy, gotta feel for him. paralyzed and no one wanted him. that's so sad

It's not the dog, it's the owner. I've had 4 pits and a bull terrier, all the best dogs I've ever had the pleasure of owning.

oh please, get the fuck out of here with that stupid bullshit.

i hate hearing this fuckin debate.

they are an AGGRESSIVE DOG BREED, THE OWNER HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THEM KILLING OTHER PEOPLE'S PETS.

god i fuckin hate pitbull apologists more than i do fuckin libtards

yeah, obviously it's "the owner" when pitbull attacks are higher than any other dog breed by a wide margin and why places, like the county i live in, make them ILLEGAL. There are a ton of shitty and negligent chihuahua owners, how come they don't need to be muzzled?

way to ruin a good thread fasttang you shithead

Well at least CW didn't get too carried away.

lol

I believe that when it comes to dog attacks in general, pits are at the lower end of the frequency spectrum. It's just that it's like getting hit by a freight train - it doesnt happen often, but when it does you're fugged.

I got 2 dogs now - from what they say (and what Ive seen) Red is great with dogs/kids/people in general. I work from home 50% of the week on average so I think this may be a good fit.

That dog is so cute- you can tell from the video it has a nice disposition. I say go for it. Why did the owner not want him back? Is the guy too sick still?

Awesome 75th. Those dogs have great dispositions when brought up right. I can't believe how shitty people can be sometimes. And I hope those fuckers that shot that pup got theirs. I applaud you and wifey doing something for this beautiful pit.

I have been attacked by a dog, and it was an Afghan Hound. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Dogs will attack for various reasons, you can't really blame them for that, it's in their nature to use their teeth instead of giving you a punch in the face. Pit bulls will do somewhat more damage due to their upperbody and jaw strength which allows them to hang on and savage you a bit more.
But any dog can have their temperment spoiled by an incapable/indulgent/abusive owner.
Once your dog begins to show aggression and bite you either have to 1) start from scratch and retrain it with a lot of discipline and very little independence, 2) give it to somebody who can train and correct the bad behavior properly or 3) put it down before it hurts somebody. People always come before dogs.

Caveman, if a little snippy dog like a chiwawa buts you you can shoo it away. However when a pit bites you it's extremely hard to fight the strength of that dog. Don't be an ass about animals and the rep pits get is due mostly to their owners. Ignorant people generally grab up a dog like that because they are tough, don't know or have zero training to raise a dog and end up with a pissed off aggressive muscle bound dog like a pit. My family has one and because he was brought up as a puppy by my family he is about as big a pussy cat as a dog can get. Unless you have owned one then don't go by what you read or hear in the media. They will never report a dog bite from a corgi.

I was helping my sister train her's (corgi) And that little shit bit my hand. It broke my skin but hardly more than some pressure and a band aid would require as far as attention. Think about pits as steroids and the rap they get. Do you believe the stories and mass media delusional rhetoric in roid rage from joose? I don't. Same thing with dogs. Pits get over attention because of awful owners and lack of care they provide these animals.

homeboy is 70 and lives on the 3rd floor of a building with no elevator. :(

Thank you for having an educated opinion.

CW didn't say anything about pits attacking people. Pits that are good with people will go after other animals more than other breeds. It's just what they are. My dobie was the gentlest dog in the world around people and other dogs, but he'd go after any cat he thought he'd be able to get and he'd try to kill it.

Let me guess, you carry your little teacup poodle around in your "manbag" and dress it up in pink tootoos. And you think it's a "chick magnet"...

My Neapolitan Mastiff thought that every other living creature on earth (Besides the family) should be dead. My home owners insurance required locked 6 foot fences around my entire house and warning signs on all gates and fences. Not just "beware of dog" signs, but signs stating it was "private property" and "no trespassing". Some dogs just have a nasty disposition.

I don't see that as nasty, that's exactly what that breed is supposed to do and has done for thousands of years, be the guardians of the home and family. You have to really socialize the hell out of them constantly to keep them from becoming hyperprotective so you can have your friends and family over without concerns.

I'm of the "it's not the dog, it's the owner" school. That being said, far too many people own powerful breed dogs they have no business owning (the same thing can be said about far too many people reproducing that have no business having children, too :whatever: ).

Yep, that's why I picked her. Well, that and I just thought an ugly, saggy-skinned, 225 lb dog was pretty damn cool.

I don't think they're ugly at all. I happen to think all (good/classic) representatives of the mastiff breeds are very handsome animals.

lol, you kinda started the hijack by bringing up the "I don't like pits bc they are aggressive and kill other animals" comment. Just sayin....

75th, do it. What a poor little guy.

why u mad?

I think you're somewhat right. My opinion is that they are a breed that requires a very strong and strong willed owner. Someone who they will see as the alpha "pack leader" without question.

Most people who own pits just shouldn't own them IMO. But you look at even the most vicious pits, and someone like Cesar Milan can come along and work with those dogs and rehabilitate them back into a pack and they no longer fight with other dogs...just cements the fact that they need a strong owner with a lot of time to devote to them.

They are a high energy breed and you have to give them something good to do with that energy or they will do something bad with it (like attacking other animals or people).

I think your rant seems on the extreme end of the spectrum, in other words.

I have five dogs, three of which are "bull" breeds. And I am not afraid to put each one of them in their place if they get froggy, which is very rare. They view me as dad, and you can't be afraid to scruff them and do what their mom or dad would do to them. I understand why people have that view and I agree it takes a certain owner to have a bull breed. But with proper training and a strong alpha figure, bully breeds can be some of the best dogs you will ever own. I have an 8 yo and she has grown up with my dogs, and I trust them 100% with her or I wouldn't have them.
Difference of opinions is good, but don't attack someone because of their opinion.

That goes for a lot of breeds. I have two pits. One was pretty much a rescue. The other we got because my wife said the first was the most loyal dog she'd ever had.

Now they're two of the best behaved dogs I know, because they know I'm the damn boss. But do they chase squirrels and other small animals? What large breed dog doesn't? Are they protective, especially over my wife? Fuck yeah.

They're not for everyone but, I don't think CW has ever owned a dog over 10 lbs. Don't believe everything you read/see bro.

I have to bump this, seriously, only to add there is a difference between what Cesar does and what a dog trainer does. Cesar doesn't teach a dog to perform tricks, he fixes the emotional problem (which he calls energy, never mind the terminology, 99% of the time it's the human's problem because they think dogs use a human brain to think) and when that problem is fixed THEN the dog trainer can teach the damn dog tricks.

I FRIGGIN' LOVE CESAR!!! He da man!!! I own two of his books and I'm a cat person.

And to trainers who disdain Cesar's methods, fuck them, seriously. Every one of them is applying human psychology to an animal's mind, which doesn't work.

Cesar uses a lot of touch and body language with dogs, that's how dogs communicate. I have cats, six of them, and cats communicate through body language (posture and tail position) and eye contact. I have a couple of cats that I can actually get to do certain things (come to me, sit on my lap -- or not -- sit or stand in a specific spot) without moving my body or saying a word or using food. You just have to understand that cats communicate by eye contact. If I look at virtually any of my cats, then look at where I want it to be, then look back at my cat, the cat will get up and move to where I looked (some of them are faster on the uptake than others). Shit like that wouldn't work with dogs but a really good example of dog versus cat psychology: In a dog, sniffing butts is a way of greeting; in cats, sniffing butts is considered the epitome of trust. When a cat sticks its ass in your face, it's actually giving you the highest compliment it can (in it's language). You need to realize, the cat is doing the equivalent of giving you a copy of both its car keys AND the keys to its house. On the other hand, for dogs, ass sniffing is equivalent to shaking hands and exchanging business cards.

Animals don't friggin' communicate the same way we do, but they DO communicate. You just have to find their language.

exactly! And oral sex is NOT sexual relations!

I've been trying to help Bill spread this message for years now!!

I grew up with chihuahuas that bit me all the fucking time, guess how many times any of my 3 great dane I used to have bit me? NONE, and one of them was pretty ferocious when rescued(because he was tied with a 4ft cord), people baby chihuahuas and establish no limits so they're awful dogs sometimes, if they were the size of a pitbull with it's strength they'd be ALL over the news too....

Awwww  my first dog with my hubby was a N Mastiff... RIP Drago.... severe hip dysplasia at 4 months :( hubby loves them but was so heartbroken he couldnt get another, changed to danes...

Neopolitan's have lots of health problems. Mine lasted about 6.5 years until she died of old age. I think I buried her about 6 weeks ago.

how about

fuck off

Jeezis dude. He's going to adopt a crippled dog that probably feels embarrassed and will just love him unconditionally. While (for the most part) I agree with you on the pits attacking other animals, this dog doesn't pose a threat to anyone other than 75th's gook carpet.

dude, i was all about adopting THIS dog. i think it's awesome for animals with disabilities/special needs to be taken in. i'd be lying if i didn't get misty after seeing the pic and when 75th said no one wanted him

hence why i said "you're the man".

i only got annoyed because some newb decided to get into the whole "it's not the dog it's the owner" asinine argument about his own pitbulls. it had nothing to do with this little critter

i wish i didn't derail the thread from something extremely positive to something negative, but when fuckstick decided to insert his own "pitbulls aren't dangerous" agenda into the mix when it wasn't even warranted, that really annoyed me. the whole basis for that typical pitbull apologist argument is so asinine.

Well yeah, I agree. I took Q to the farmers' market the other week and a dane at a rescue tent lunged at her and knocked her in the face with its teeth. It was a puppy and playing, Q was ok, so I wasn't pissed. But one of the assholes at the booth/ tent said she must have provoked her and I saw white. I told him he just provoked me and with one call I could have the animal destroyed. Dumbass kept popping off to me as I took Q away crying.

Fuck, I'm so mad thinking back on it I'm shaking. Dogs=ok. People that humanize animals and think they're perfect=fagtcvnts.
