Sweet! I was gonna do a deck this fall, but I'm still debating. I already have the patio set, and I put a retaining wall around it earlier this spring. I'd like to put a hot tub back there, but I clean up enough thongs out of the backyard as it is.

If I were staying in the house and had the room, I'd definately do a full deck. I LOVE to walk straight out of my kitchen on a Saturday morning and have a nice cup of coffee on the deck. I don't want to sit in the dewey grass.

no, he just likes to insert random thoughts into threads to make himself look like the insane poster when it's convenient.

jack- i think it's safe to say i'm VERY into home improvement, young man. I'm considering building a chicken coop. But, an elaborate, really nice one.

Oh I know your into home improvement...I love a woman wearing nothing but a toolbelt, a thong and a smile .

I was petitioning for a home improvement forum a couple of years ago but I got no where. There are only a few peeps on this board I know of that are into that sort of thing though..GL, you, aap and myself.

yeah, pretty much. it would be awesome though. i'm totally into that stuff.
well, everything except electrical work- but that's what GL is for. :)

anyway, i have an idea for a chicken coop, but i'd probably buy plans anyway- mostly because i don't know what's really RIGHT for chickens. i want a big pen area though, so i'd build a frame and enclose it with wire and a door for me to get in. I'm thinking like a 12' x 12' pen that leads right into the coop that could be accessed (by me) from outside the pen by lifting the roof on a hinge and gathering eggs.

Get in touch with Blut Wump...I know he's into tending chickens...he could probably give you a few pointers on that one. Smart dude.

yah, we've spoken a while ago.

my dad had chickens when i was growing up- i love them, but the type of coop i'd want is big and i don't know if i want that, or the responsibility, etc.
I can get fresh eggs everywhere around here, so i'm still undecided.

I want to build a "chick" coup...you know, one where I can keep chicks...

good luck with that. just make sure you keep them blind folded even after they get there, nomatter how much they scream.

Ok, I'm off to the kitchen...I need to get some quality power tool time in before I have to work tomorrow.

are you still thinking of moving near me?
if so, give me some notice.

this is similar to what I want to build:
http://www.plamondon.com/poulthous_files/poulthous_illustraditional.jpg

but i think i want to make the roof on a hinge so i can reach into it from that way OR walk in through a short door. and I want an area they can walk out and still be safe, like a super large screened in porch for chickens.

I have to clear some trees first.

I'll be posting pics of my latest home improvement whenever I get it completed.

I've been so busy lately it's taking forever.

My parents asked me to design them a house so I did. Then I got suckered into building it. It's only me, my cousin and another guy trying to frame a 3000 sq ft house. We got the roof up last weekend.

On top of that I am doing work on their existing house to get it ready for sale.

I have not had time to breath lately.

Ignore this post. I am just venting.

That's pretty fast, nomatter what size it is.
The framing is done inside? I saw an interesting tip on wall framing yesterday that I didn't know.

My post was confusing.

What I meant is that we finished getting the roof up last weekend. It's taken us about 3 months to get the basement walls up, stud framing completed, and rafters with sheathing up.

Now the masons, electricians, plumbers and shingle people can come do their thing and I can finally take a breather.

when i was a girl scout, we slept in A-frames just like that but without the chickens

GL, is that the Dewalt 18 v compact heavy duty cordless drill you got there?

If so, I bought one recently. Ace hardware had a Labor Day sale and had it for $149.
I checked Lowes and theirs was $209.
Helluva deal I got there.

DeWalt makes me cream my pants. I love them.

well you know how when you're laying floor joists, you put them so that the bow of the wood is up, so when it settles, it's flat?

when framing the walls, make sure the bow of the wood all goes in the same direction too. otherwise, you can have some pretty wavey sheetrock.

we could have little baby deWalts.

anyway, i have done some minor wall framing, but i have to admit that I never looked at which way the wood bowed- i just try to find the straightest pieces.

still, you worked fast IMO.

once their job is done, it's going to look so close to finished that it gets really exciting. Once that first sheet of sheetrock goes up, you're almost home free.

(pun not intended).

My cousin is an excellent framer. He does this stuff for a living.

Our cut man (saw guy) quit on us a few weeks into the project and so I tried taking his spot. Now I'm fairly good at carpentry and construction but I had no idea of the lingo he was shouting at me.

"I need a 2X6er three-quarter set ahead at 14 inches with a birdmouth midspan and a dog ear cut at a 30 bevel for a 8 and 12 common"

I was like WTF? Did he really just say he needed a dog ear?
:lmao:

It took me a while to catch on.

'Smart framing' on the corners. don't forget.

Your utility bills will thank you.

and Air infiltration, air infiltration, air infiltration.

My DeWalt was $250 with 2 batteries. I like them but they're freaking pricey. Ehhh.

damn. i wouldn't know what that is, except a 30 bevel for an 8 and 12 probably means this was for a ceiling joist?

I think we should all get together and build a house that we can all touch tools in.

****IN OTHER NEWS****

The grouting is finished, and I just applied the last coat of sealer. In the mean time, I'm installing wooden blinds and will caulk sometime later tonight. Pics of this masterpiece soon to come.

My fucking garbage disposal siezed up too, so sometime today I have to put in a new one of those too .

yeah for the rafter terminating in at a valley.

If I can find a way to upload pdf files I'll post some plans of the house...

AH, that's what the bevel was for. i got it.

When i start building my chicken coop, i'll post pics too. I haven't cleared the spot in the woods yet, or decided on whether i'm going to buy plans or make them myself (ie, make it up as i go along), but i know it won't look like some little shack. if i am going to see it from my house, i want it to look good.

:)
