GoldenDelicious, your thoughts on acne meds

Which acne meds do you think are the most effective? Which ones are the "best" in your opinion? Thoughts on accutane? Are there any new acne meds in development now? Thanks!

acne meds are bastards, because the answer is always 'depends'. this might sound like a cop out, but if you have an acne problem, see a dermatologist (not a normal doctor) and follow their advice, because they have seen it all. repeatedly. there are just sooooooo many ways to try and treat acne, that i would be typing all night. how come...do you have acne issues?

anyway...accutane is effective...i dont like the pregnancy issues, and i dont like some of the sides (toxicity, emotional probs like depression) but as long as the doctor who gave it to the patients actually regularly follows up on them, then yeah, its good. its when the doctor gives it out then just forgets about the patient that you get problems, or when the patient (female) decides to risk pregnancy...then it gets ugly.

i havnt kept in touch with acne meds (new ones) since theyre all pretty much specialist meds, and the doctor has already extensively counselled the patient.

sorry i couldnt say more, but its a kinda big issue :)

edit: its driving me nuts seeing my name in thread titles...i always think im going mad...

first try:

OTC cleaning stuff. Get benzoyle peroxide and 2% salcilic acid body washes. Use one in the morning and one at night. Use them both at the same time if your skin can handle it, some people dry out.
Get some wipes too, salcilic acid.. use them before bed on affected areas.

Prescription stuff: Work with your dermatologist and some of the ointments... retin-a micro.. and other antibiotics come in an ointment form. personally these do nothing for me.

Oral antibiotics, again your dermatologist will pick what they think is best... suggest doxycycline or minocycline.

Accutane is a last resort med in my opinion, unfortunate what I described above doesn't work for anyone.

certain people's skind are VERY sensitive to even the slightest hormonal changes.. if you are in this boat the best thing you can do is keep your hormone levels constant.

does that mean doxycycline and minocycline are practically the sme antibiotic? is minocycline used to treat std's and urinary tract infections like doxycycline is?

no theyre not the same, theyre similar (same class of drug)

minocycline is used mainly for acne, while doxy is used for a lot more stuff. the reason is because doxy is well tolerated, and so is preferrd. you could probably use minocycline in the same sort of way (maybe) but whats the point? you already have an effective, well tolerated, well understood drug in doxy.
