GM spotting

anyone know how to do it? anyone who has done it or seen it knows that this is not an easy one to spot for obvious reasons. should the spotter stand in front of the lifter and if he is likely to miss the lift, the spotter gently pushes the bar up?

use a power rack and set the pins just below your lowest position, thats probably the best way....otherwise it might look a bit too.... friendly if someone were spotting you from behind.

yep it is a LITTLE friendly... LOL. but the spotter also does tend to get in the way from behind.... no innuendo intended :p

Interesting question which I'd never thought about before. Without a doubt the bars in the squat rack are the best option provided that you're not of the mindset that every rep must be completed even if help is required, in which case therapy is required before doing GMs.

In the absence of a rack and if the lifter is using a lot of weight then I can't think of any alternative to doing it from the front. You can't even be squatting down in front of him to take the load on your back since there'll be too little room.

best bet if you have no safety catches is to use the lift as a repetition (ligher weight) exercise or do RDL's if you are going heavy and worrying about failure.

I've actually never done a GM, but I don't like the idea of going heavy enough to require use of a spotter. I would do them always stopping a few reps short of failure.

We rotate them in and go up to our heaviest set that we can hit a triple for a couple of reasons... one that has been pointed out here they are close to impossible to spot although we do it from behind just like a squat, always use the rack and if someone is stuck I always have them squat out of it, shouldn't be but a few inches to get it down to the rack, most guys won't go deep enough on the first one, if you make the set a "make it or miss it" single, they'll probably not go anywhere near depth to make it count, they typically get deeper as the set goes on so we do triples and also cuz they put such a strain on the lower back, it takes a while to build up those muscles if you haven't already and helps a bit with injury avoidance.

Can you say run-on?...
