Glycogen or FAT - What difference does it make?

I started thinking about something recently. In terms of FAT loss, don't we get too caught up on whether we are using FAT or Glycogen for our energy needs during our cardio workouts?

If you think about it, we are burning calories, are we not? And isn't that our objective? What difference does it make as long as at the end of the day that we burn more cals than we take in, providing we get the required protein and nutrients of course?

If Glycogen happens to be available and we happen to burn glycogen during a workout instead of FAT, then we'll have less glycogen to burn throughout the day and will be burning FAT reserves instead, right? Won't the body have no choice but to tap into whatever is left for energy needs?

Now perhaps I'm wrong but it seems to me that what I'm suggesting would be the case. And if we are so concerned with burning FAT instead of glycogen then shit, why don't we all just go on CKD diets? Just my .02

Bump!!

The way this board works is anything that is replied to goes back to the top of the board.

a Bump is basically just saying your bumping the thread to the top because its good info/good question/that you think other should see or hope to have answered as well.

oic, Thanks for the explanation.

yes ckd is always the best way to loose fat when natural, the only problem is, it takes alot of discipline and meal planning, so much so that most cant handle it on a day to day basis; IMO.

You'll get no arguement from me. This is why, despite all the theory behind insulin inhibiting lipolysis, we find that people that increase their activity level without increasing calories will lose fat. It doesn't matter when they eat relative to their exercise sessions. However if a dieter is not smart (ie doesn't eat enough protein, doesn't engage in resistance exercise, cuts calories too low etc...) then they may also lose a significant amount of muscle.

Hoffmeister bumped your quote because he agreed with it. I agree with

However take morning cardio for ex. An hour later, one would refill your glycogen stores - and you will use the glycogen for energy. However, the hour prior to eating, regardless of whether fat was used during the cardio or not, it should be used later, when there is nothing but that. However, the big debate is also about what will the body choose for energy - muscle, or fat?

But overall, I agree with you.
