Glycerin

I was reading the ingredient list on a Biochem Protein Bar and I couldn't get the calories to add up. Then I saw, in tiny little print, a note that said "Glycerin accounts for 4.63 calories." I did the math, and discovered that there has to be about 25 grams of glycerin in those bars.

I tried doing a search on the net for glycerin and most of the articles dealt with its use in soap & candles.

Does anyone know exactly what glycerin is or its nutritional info? This bar lists only 2g of carbs - but is glycerin considered a carb or sugar??

Thanks for any insight anyone can offer -

"To put it simply, it is better to consume glycerin than carbohydrates, if only because it doesn’t elicit an insulin response. Glycerin also increases the hydration levels within your bloodstream, allowing for increase endurance while reducing lost water balance. This allows individuals to train for longer periods, without experiencing dehydration and possibly reduced core body temperature."

I took that from this web page

This one also deals on the subject

So Glycerin are carbs but do not produce an insulin response. And still account for 4 calories per gram
