Glutamine - worth it or not?

Is glutamine worth the money? What exactly does it do and would it be good to use while cutting? Also should I add flax seed oil to my cutting diet because I am taking high protien and moderate fat and low carbs.

Please help me out.

Whenever I am either cutting or ending a cycle I always supplement with 20 grams of glutamine per day. When on a calorie restricted diet, glutamine will help preserve the muscle mass that you already have. IMO one of the most vital supplements under protein and to a lesser extent creatine.

I agree w/ Almighty. The stuff definitely helps me when I get that damn tennis elbow soreness from the heavy weights. Great stuff! Get the kind with Chondroitan ,sp. as well!

IMO it's not worth it. Results seem to be from the Placebo effect. Besides, the doage needed would be high enough to make the supplement not cost effective. You intestines and gut will absorb virtually all the glutamine you take as a preferred source for energy, very little will get through. But still some find it usefull.

Unless you are a burn patient i would invest in good food.:)

Aside from the reported GH secretion which I never made a big deal about with it some people don't realize that glutamine makes up over 60% of the free amino acid content in muscle tissue and during times of intense stress(Working out) your body must take away it's stores from the intestines and use it to support the immune system rather than for muscle tissue. Does it make sense to use it? Of course it does. Everyone is bodybuilding or who is educated on performance nutrition knows that glutamine is essential to every athlete. It's the best legal bodybuilding supplement aside from protein shakes and vitamins IMO. Better than creatine? Hell yeah it is and it provied cell voluminization effects as well. It's really cheap too bro and there is no reason why you shouldn't take it!!!

Glutamine is a must, especially before cardio sessions and after workouts.

I dont' know where this placebo stuff is coming from, but glutamine is one of the most important supplements you can take. It is the most important amino acid you can take and is a must for muscle recovery. I take 15-20 g per day.

Should I add glutamine and BCAAs to my protein drinks?

The Study: Subjects were weight trained for 10 weeks and ingested 2.1 g of protein/kg/day (That's about 190 grams per day for a 200 lb man). Group one took 40 grams of supplemental whey protein per day. Group two took 40 grams of whey, 5 grams of glutamine, and 3 grams of BCAA's.

The Results: Group two showed increases in bodyweight (2.6 lb), increases in strength, and decreases in post exercise lactic acid build up (a measure of exercise recovery) vs. group one. There was no difference in fat mass between the two groups.(9)

Comments: I've been a proponent of supplemental glutamine in athletes for years now. Unfortunately until now, most of the studies have been on clinical patients. This was a nice study that finally showed that in normal subjects, a high protein diet supplemented with whey protein, glutamine, and BCAA's can increase lean mass, body weight, and strength. Any of you supplement companies out there want to donate some glutamine and BCAA's to the Help Get John Berardi Huge Fund? I'm taking both cash and supplement donations.
