Glutamine - worth it or not?

Should I add glutamine and BCAAs to my protein drinks?

The Study: Subjects were weight trained for 10 weeks and ingested 2.1 g of protein/kg/day (That's about 190 grams per day for a 200 lb man). Group one took 40 grams of supplemental whey protein per day. Group two took 40 grams of whey, 5 grams of glutamine, and 3 grams of BCAA's.

The Results: Group two showed increases in bodyweight (2.6 lb), increases in strength, and decreases in post exercise lactic acid build up (a measure of exercise recovery) vs. group one. There was no difference in fat mass between the two groups.(9)

Comments: I've been a proponent of supplemental glutamine in athletes for years now. Unfortunately until now, most of the studies have been on clinical patients. This was a nice study that finally showed that in normal subjects, a high protein diet supplemented with whey protein, glutamine, and BCAA's can increase lean mass, body weight, and strength. Any of you supplement companies out there want to donate some glutamine and BCAA's to the Help Get John Berardi Huge Fund? I'm taking both cash and supplement donations.

hey there lame but if you read you can find good stuff sometimes

just DO NOT read anything tc luoma writes he a good business man but a workout/steroid idiot

OK, so a diet like this increases muscle mass and improves the body composition. BUT so do other diets as well. Including Dr. Mauro's Anabolic diet as well as the Atkins diet. As far as glutamine supplementation, i am not sold on it. I think there is a lot of very clever marketing on the part of the manufacturers with supposed studies, some i am sure have skewed results to boast their products. The Protein powder industry is the same way.

So, i do not think Glutamine is "worthless", just not all that necessary and certainly not worth the expence.

A excellent diet and some mulit-vitamins and intelligent training will do wonders.

PS.

I think the protein industry is one of the biggest supplement scams in this country, Bodybuilders have been brainwashed and flooded with easily setup studies showing "advantages" of high protein diets. In reality a good diet with some supplemental protein is more then enough, something on the order of an extra 50grams per day from powders is plenty.

what you say is true.....but....

why suplement with creatine you can get all the creatine you want from red meat....at about 1 gram per/lb of redmeat consumed thats just 20lbs a day for loading and 5 to 7 POUNDS of red meat a day for maintenence

if you could have a personal chef and all the money in the world and all the time in the world etc you wouldnt have to take any suplements just get you vitamins from fresh fruits and veggies and your protein from tasty well made meals with low fat and a varity of recipies so you dont get bored.....

i could go on all day like this

take glutamine or drink a gallon of milk a day(milk has a lot of glutamine)

"got glutamine?"

"glutamine...it does a body good."

I've used the stuff at both high and low doses. Noticed nothing but an empty wallet. For cutting I felt BCAA's did a better job at preserving than Glutamine did. I think it's a waste.

HighIntensity "if you drink milk you get pleanty "

I'm with gwl9dta4 and riskybizz007.

Most people should enhance there knowledge and efforts to better there diet and training before spending money by mega dosing a non-essential amino acid, no matter what composition it holds in your body.

The non-essential part alone negates its use on any other diet than a cutting diet. Anyone who uses Glutamine while bulking is pissing there money down the yellow river. Instead of paying a lot of money to supplement glutamine in its separate form, people would get better results by spending that extra money on more food source protein (or supplemental) with full amino acid profiles – this includes cutting.

Glutamine is obviously important to your body, but it is not as important as the supplement companies and there spokes-builders praise it to be. If you don't get enough glutamine through your diet and need to supplement with high doses of glut, I would emphasize you reevaluate your diet.

Why on earth would you think twice about replacing the most abundant amino acid in your body?
With a slight change. Why on earth would you think twice about replacing the most abundant amino acid in skeletal muscle
