Gladiator... what would be your choice of weapon?

Trident and net? Sword and shield? Sword and dagger? Mace? Two short swords? Battle axe?

And why?
 
fuck that trident and net.. those dudes always got pwned.

Sword and shield. perfect balance. The trident and net are just too bulky.
 
Shield & short sword. If you have the trident/net, then if the enemy gets in close, yer fucked.
2 swords, you gotta be pretty quick & accurate if you need to use one defensively.
Battle Axe & Mace both need room to swing & gain momentum. Not very accurate if opponent is quick. No close in use.

and hell on that two short sword crap too.
 
shield and sword. sword because i'm a ninja, and ninjas need swords.

shield because i want to be stylish with a neat little insignia, yay.

actually trident and net would be pretty deadly. you tangle the opponent and then stab him.

The net is heavy and slow moving, as is the trident. Once inside his guard, he's toast.
 
he can grap sword blows between his trident spear, spin the handle and wrest the sword away from the opponent. The net was not that heavy, bascially just light enough to swing and distract your opponent with. Not like it was designed to weigh them down.
 
The trident was 4 pounds and 52" in length giving a distinct reach advantage. While the net was used to ensnare an opponent or his weapon, the dagger could be used for the coup de grace. However, a fit man with a gladius could generate more force than any other ancient weapon and the the shield is an excellent defensive tool for parrying as well as offensively to "bash" your opponent. I have to come down on the side of the gladius and shield. Fighting with two hand weapons takes too much training and experience, you'd probably be killed before developing your skill.

Defensive armour slowed them down.......the net and trident fighters wore practically none which made them faster. I'd take the short sword and the shield.

The net was fairly small,weighted for throwing but was often used "rolled" to ensnare weapons or an opponets limb; For tripping etc.

that would seem to be a good weapon in a group battle where the opponent wouldnt see it coming and would be fucked. In a one on one I would think shield and sword would be best.

I remember reading in a book that gladiators would have sex with 2+ women the day before since they were the equivalent of our boys band/rock stars.
 
Actually, even though he's almost always set up as the loser in bad gladiator movies, the retiarius ("net and trident guy") had a better win/loss record than the other specialists in the arena.

The short sword owned the ancient world when used as an army weapon, in a tight formation, but when the Romans finally came up against steel swords (down around present day Serbia? have to double-check), they chucked their short swords and took up the new longer style without a second thought.
 
The net could be a formidable weapon. You woulnd't have to throw it. You could swing it in front to keep enemies at by and stab at them with your trident.
