Hi,
First time poster.
When I got out of high school I weighed close to 300 pounds which was pure fat… I went on a low-carb diet and proceeded to get myself down to as low as 174, a little too low for my liking.. and proceeded to settle in at 190.
I was not happy with my body though, I still looked fat even though I was skinny. God knows what my bf was but I’m sure it wasn’t healthy. I eventually discovered lifting and protein and supplementation all of that, but was ultimately unable to discover any true consistency, usually getting lazy about 8-10 weeks in… (on top of an extremely 7 day a week full time job plus part job plus full time plus school schedule… no excuses, just couldn’t muster the commitment necessary).. which also tended to be about the time the most results started setting in.
Anyway, fast forward, I’m now in my mid-twenties.. and at the new year found myself a little over 225 pounds, totally uninterested in fitness, a victim of my own complacency and probably too many protein shakes without enough lifting.
At first I started just general dieting, watching portions, etc etc… got myself down to about 205 pounds when I decided to get back into the gym on May 15 of this year… and on the same day revamped my diet to include six “meals” three meals and three “snacks”, consisting of whole foods, quality proteins, whole grains and wheats, lots of fruit and vegetables, whey protein and a good multivitamin. I started back doing an upper/lower split the first two weeks, just to get the body acclimated to lifting again, and went into a 5 day split, doing 12 sets for the large muscle groups, 8-10 for the smallest muscle groups. (I KNOW many people would say this was too much too soon, but it just progressed naturally and felt right … for better or worse.) In addition, I incorporated 10 minutes of pre-workout stretching, and ab training after most workouts (“splitting” between 6 set/20 rep upper, lower & oblique sessions). Also, in an effort to focus on exorcising my body fat demons as quickly as possible, 30 minutes of high intensity cardio, plus a 5 minute cool down session, 5 days a week (I am at the point now where I can burn a little over 500 calories per cardio session).
During the first week of June I realized I needed to document my results because things were progressing nicely… so here are my official stats as of June 10th..
Weight 198
Body fat 27.75%
Lean body mass 143.06
Fat Mass 54.94
As of June 30th
Weight 194
Body fat 22.63 %
Lean body mass 150.09
Fat Mass 43.91
Change of over 5% body fat, +7 muscle, -11 fat
The gains on my lifts have been incredible, truly.. and above all thanks to the cardio my endurance has just gained by leaps and bounds… I feel vital. I’m also experienced enough to know that this is when it is most important to stay focused and also not to burn out… with night classes starting up in September, that’s when the real challenge will start. I am hoping that I can continue to make important body fat strives and by the fall be able to focus on adding the mass that so far is coming easy but I realize won’t for long. I have a lot of knowledge, I have read and seen it all, now I want my body to be living proof. It’s no fun being into bodybuilding if people don’t take one look at you and instinctively know that you are, in fact, a bodybuilder.
That’s my story, hope I can contribute my two cents to the boards on occasion!
