Giving up protein shakes for a while...

I'm going to try to get all my protein from solid food. Today's meal plan:

breakfast - 4 eggs (2 yolks) and 2 waffles

9am - PB&J on wheat bread

10am - 1 can tuna

12pm - salad from Subway with 2 chicken breasts

2pm - celery with Peanut Butter

3pm - 1 can tuna

6:30 (post workout) - PB&J

8pm - dinner (usually something healthy that my girlfriend cooks. Either 1 large chicken breast or steak with veggies).


I'll se how my body likes this for a while.
 
That's kinda looking like my diet for the past week or so, being sick and having finals at school has really fucked me over - I don't know that I would intentionally decrease protein to that level, but maybe you'll respond well to it... I havn't really lost anything at all...

I am a firm believer in getting protein from real food sources. The one exception is post workout. I only drink 1 shake a day and it is 20-30 mins post workout and it is a necessity IMO.
 
Fro, I made the transition to whole-food sources over a year ago -- I have maybe one protien shake per month. I firmly believe that whole-food protein is better than most, if not all, protein powders out there. Powder is popular because that's a foundation money-maker for all supplement companies; they would have you beleive that you would wither away to nothing without powder. Not true. There was a time when I was taking in 2-3 shakes/day. My training and body has never been better than when I quit doing this and went to whole food.

Some will say it's not convienient, but it isn't too hard to carry around a tin of peanuts; a carton of plain yogurt; a small container of cottage cheese, a can of tuna, etc...

Milk, fish, meat, nuts, cottage cheese, plain yogurt, cheese are all great sources of protein -- (most are low in carbs too) they also have a lot of ancilliary nutrients. (for instance, the average 16 0z. serving of milk has about 2 grams of glutamine).

Go for it, if you're anything like me, you'll like the difference...
 
Well, I've learned that I tend to overestimate the amount of protein I get a day. Writing my diet down helps and by looking at this, I'd estimate only about 200 g of protein. I need to up my solid food intake, especially if I'm cutting out protein shakes.

I agree, and think that if you do have a protein shake, that post-workout is probably the right time to do it. Although I don't find it personally necessary.

Post-workout, I usually just slam 16 oz of milk and have a half-cup cottage cheese or plain yogurt (with a 1/8 cup raisins) -- followed by a "real meal" shortly thereafter...

Damn, all this talk about food has got me hungry... I'm going to get some yogurt now...
 
I may get an MRP type shake for post workout. I carry a cooler with me to the gym so I can drink a shake on the drive home from the gym.

Today, post workout will be a PB&J with water.


The hardest part about this fucking sport is eating.

Replace the water with milk -- you still need a "liquid" source of protein post-workout to get into the muscles fast... Also, a lone pb&j isn't going to have enough protein or carbs for a post-workout meal -- about 22 grams protein (2, 2tbsp servings peanut butter, 2 slices of bread). 16 oz. of milk will add another 16-18 grams protein, 2 grams glutamine and 20 or so carbs to the mix...

The eating part is true... I think it's not so much just protein (although that's important), but total caloric intake...
 
I'll stop by the Quik-E-Mart on my way home and pick up a pint or 2 of milk. I'll also make sure to have some to go with my post workout meal in the future.

Who knows, maybe I'll break down and go buy some protein powder for post workout shakes. But I go on vacation in 5 days and don't really feel like worrying about it until I get back.
