gift card: thoughtfull or insulting?

i've known this mechanic and his family for over 30 years. we worked together during my college summer "vacations" and have stayed in touch over the years.

because of our friendship; he has seldom charged me full price for mechanical/air conditioning work on my cars and trucks. last november he changed the heater core in my town car and wouldn't take a penny for his labor. several times he has not charged me for adding freon to the a/c on my cars.

i'm thinking about getting a gift card from the grocery chain store that he and his wife shops at and mailing it to him; with a short note expressing my appreciation for his taking care of me and my cars.

if you were he, would you be flattered, insulted or something else, finding this gift card in the mail?

I always appreciate gift cards. When someone gives you a gift card/certificate from a store that you often use, or for a coffee place or restaurant that you often go to, that's a thoughtful gift IMO.
