would like to hear the boards views on this.
vinylgroover said:Education is the most important thing in life (besides your health). If you have the chance to study further, take it, some would kill just for a high school education.
It will open up your mind, eyes and ears much more than you already think.

why is this? because "society says" it is what we are supposed to do in our brainwashed culture? i for one am extremely unhappy wasting my time in university, when i am held back from pursuing things i would enjoy (and make more money with) if i was not in school. some of the greatest people ive heard about did not get formally educated, they had two things, a plan, and ambition, that's all you need.
what is the point of learning with no intrinsic interest? that's right, there isnt one.
naturally anabolic said:you have two choices after highschool, college of some sort or military
vinylgroover said:Are you looking for an argument or advice?
If you've already made up your mind, which it sounds you have, then why the hell did you ask for advice in the first place, moron.
You just sound like another loser who doesn't know what to do with himself so you slag everything. Typical cynic.

vinylgroover said:What warik said makes some sense, but it's all about what you expect out of education. Warik says he learned much more on the job than he did at uni....much more about what.
vinylgroover said:What about learning how to source information, prepare assignments, work to deadlines, perform under pressure etc
buddy28 said:Name one other respected profession requiring a significant knowledge base( not sales) , in which u can get a job without a University diploma
Because people still study to the test, same as the SATs.If you can walk into a medical office with no college whatsoever and pass some kind of examination, then I don't see why you should not be hired as a doctor.
vinylgroover said:The problem is that losers like you two take evrything in life, along with education for granted.
vinylgroover said:The single most important factor which brings about social inequality in society is acess/or lack thereof to education.
vinylgroover said:You both need to get real and be thankful you've had the chance to do something that millions of kids the world over would love to do.
vinylgroover said:Wankers
Zirakzigil said:You want a doctor who has years of experience in a wide range of fields, NOT a doctor who studied to the test.
Zirakzigil said:But, I agree. There should be two classes of certified physicians - those with education and those without. Let the patients choose who to see.
Warik said:
Have you yet to see the point here?
The point here is the fact that college degrees for most professions are unnecessary. That is, they should NOT be necessary.
Should you need a degree to be a math teacher? An English teacher? A social studies teacher? ANY kind of teacher? No.
A computer programmer/engineer? No.
A chemist? No.
Zirakzigil said:Not having the opportunity to be educated and HAVING to be educated to get a certain job are not in the same league at all.
vinylgroover said:My comments were primarily aimed at Matts reply to my comment that 'happiness' is more important than education.
WTF does that mean? Go to India or Bangladesh or any undeveloped country for that matter and see kids working their asses off in sweat shops for $1 a month and then come and tell me education is not important.
nordstrom said:A degree is necessary to get a job. however, you can always go through a diploma mill (if they still exist) and get a fake, but real sounding B.S., Ph.D. or M.A..
I enjoy college myself. I learn better when i have a reason to learn.
when did you start studying math. i thought you were pre-med (i may have been thinking of someone else).
buddy28 said:Did you read my whole post brightass???
You dont understand how normal employment works, do you? Gaining employment for jobs other than computer programming, or sales, require the applicant to *demonstrate* a sufficent level of problem solving, analyitical, and writing skills, in addition to a satisfactory level of knowledge associated with the position being applied for.
Because we dont live in a society where everyone knows everyone else, the method used to certify the possession of the required knowledge base and analytical skills is a degree. SURPRISE!!!! Makes sense, doesnt it?
buddy28 said:Chemist not needing a degree. Hmmm......you think your smarter then the CEOs of Merke Fizer? Right.....
Warik said:
Hell, by your logic, that punk dropout Bill Gates is just a stupid little kid compared to my professor. My professor went to college!
-Warik

buddy28 said:the point vinlygroover is trying to make is that not ALL people can learn as easily as you.
buddy28 said:Therefore, your conclusion that all college or post secondary education is a waste of time is a fallacy
buddy28 said:College, or university, in my opinion is a great experience. U get personal instruction, ur immersed and surrounded by persons taking and teaching your selected discpline. Its a great place to learn.
buddy28 said:U seem to be alittle put off because it costly.

However, if my ability to learn outside of the college environment is equal to or greater than another person's ability to learn inside the college environment, why am I required to suffer through the inefficient teaching methods of the University system?
Warik said:
My conclusion is that all college or post secondary education is a waste of time for me and people like me. I challenge you to prove that is a fallacy.
Warik said:
Do you need a college degree to be a chemist? By the "rules" governing the chemistry field, YES.
Seeing as how I'm not a chemist, nor have I had more than a basic education in chemistry, no, I'm not smarter than the CEOs, nor do I claim to be-Warik
mattcanning99 said:
no, i just wanted to see if brainwashed people (such as yourself) would push school and say it is the way to go. now Warik's reply, on the other hand, put common sense over society's morals, which it turns out, you represent.
have you ever heard about learning for the sake of interest and not because you're told?
also, this thread was not supposed to be about me. im going to stay in school just as a back up basically, i dont like it, nor do i need it. i just wanted to see how many people would give the response you did, compared to how few will give one like Warik.
mrbill said:Mattcanning...good luck in the military or whatever field you choose. There are many paths to success, each of us must decide what path we will follow. For some, such as myself, I choose to pursue a more "formal" education. Is this the only way to success? Obviously not. In general, does education equate to higher income levels?? Yes. (but there are always exceptions)
Warik, it is disingenuous to use statistical outlyers to support your argument that education is invalid or unnecessary. One can always cite extreme examples such as the success of Bill Gates to "prove" that formal education is not necessary. However, you are intelligent enough to realize that this is statistically such a random event that to use this as the basis of support for your argument is ludicrous. That would be analogous to me arguing that it is safe to jump out of airplanes without a parchute since there have been documented cases of people surviving uninjured after their parachutes failed to deploy.
