The sad thing is, Bush and Co are not the real danger.
Bush, Asscroft etc, all know what these laws are intended for. The patriot act and Patriot 2 have been on the books for quite some time now. There have not been rampant abuses, and the Supreme Court ruled against the government in the Padilla case.
These types of laws are never abused by their creators.
Subsequent governments are the abusers. A future President or leader (any party) will look to these laws as a means of getting something done, silencing opposition, or doing something otherwise questionable.
The other problem is law enforcement. There is almost NO connection between arrest and what happens in court. This is by design; courts are designed to provide redress of grievances, and they do.
However, merely arresting someone throws their life in disarray, it is very expensive, and it changes behavior even if the courts vindicate the person.
Some examples of both of my points:
1. The Interstate Commerce Act and RICO. Both of these had narrolwy defined roles when introduced into legislation. The ICA has been used to allow the federsal government osme sort of oversight into anything and everything it wants. RICO was designed to arrest people like John Gotti; today it is used against street level drug dealers. (as if Tyrone on the block in Compton knows what Racketeering is)
Neither of those laws was misused by their creators. But in time, all were misued to achieve an end. Imagine the potential for Patriot Act abuse. And it will happen. But it won't be George Bush and Co. doing it.
2. The arrest of NBA star Allen Iverson, who was charged with all kinds of Patriot Act - derived crimes. Mr Iverson makes $20M per year, so he hired a lawyer and the charges were dropped. This is just; Iverson is no terrorist. Could YOU fight the government if this happened to you?
The enemy is not the government. It is not Bush or Ashcroft or Kerry or any of those people. The enemy is INFINITE IGNORANCE: uninformed people who jump to conclusions and listen to any voice they hear.
Alex Jones is a jackass. Instead of fostering reasoned discussion of the laws government is passing, he is yelling like the Town Crier to advance some sort of agenda,
Instead of discussion, we get "Bush is the Fuhrer" (yeah right, some of you don't even know what years WW2 happened) and the ATF is the SS.
Clearly, this is not correct. But by shouting about it WITHOUT understanding these laws or their purpose or the history of this type of behavior, you only make the problem worse.
Our doom will not come at the hands of the president. it will be wrought by a population of morons in a nation that took the bold step of granting Power to the People.
