Have you had a workup for a Seizure disorder? An EEG?

Are you having unexplained pain at night? Migraines?

There really is no difference in generic vs trade name brands, other than cost. All go through FDA approval. If you don't like the generic, it is likely personal preference and not the drug itself.

I have an overally active brain..

It won't shut off my Nerologist prescribed it as part of my sleep therapy.. best way i can describe it is i was born without a shut off button.. my brain refuses to sleep and i can't seem to go past stage 2 of sleep..

Topamax is actually being tried in a few other disorders - orignally given to seisure patients, then migraines, clinical trials in bipolar disorders(not sure how sucessful).. my doctor was hoping it might help me as well - I have ADHD and sleep medications don't seem to work (I have imovane prexcribed, but it only seems to work if I take double the dose and even then only puts me out for 4 hours)

If you are takin a stimulant such as amphetamine (adderall) or methylphenidate (ritalin), try either limiting when you take it at night or switching to strattera. If new sleep medications such as lunesta (basically what you are taking) are not working, you can try switching classes as well. Topomax may be a good start, but classically, TCAs such as Amitriptyline, are first line for fibromyalgia (pain), because they can help you sleep. If you don't find sufficient relief with Topomax, ask your doctor about this.

Ritalin is likely not helping this. You can trying switching to strattera, and various neuroleptics to help you sleep. But keep in mind ritalin is an uphill battle when you have insomnia.

Additionally, you may want to have a psychiatrist help manage your sleep as well. There may be other psychomotor/emotional issues at play.

:) tried that route(Therapy).. trust me i wish there was.. my sleep has been an issue since childhood..

I have tried therapy to no avail.. i have abandonment issues but honestly in todays times who doesnt...

The ridalin has had no significant affect on my sleep.. i only started taking it a year ago and the improvments it has made on my work life have been immense.

I have an identical twin sister who can sleep up to 10 hrs a night.

I have a high metabolism, a thyroid that is sometimes outta wack.. which is monintored, low body fat year round (10-12%)

And i have had a full over view to ensure i don't suffere from any sort of Bipolar disorder or depression as ADHD is sometimes associated with other diseases of the mind

I do'nt usually write on this forum as much as read other peoples advice and stuff, but I can answer this question. There's no difference between generic and trade medications. I know that for sure. The only time u're gonna find a difference POSSIBLY is when using generic Tylenol 3's or anything like that there may be a different filler. There is no difference in the actual medication itself. There is huge testing to make sure every generic medication is the same as the trade. Occassionally, someone may feel different... it's usually either attributed to assuming you're gonna get reaction or SLIGHT possibility that the filler is different. Typically you would have an allergy to something else or another medication in that case.
Sleep deprivation seems to be a huge problem with ADD. I have add (also a mental health nurse, go figure) and have serious issues with sleeping too. Very frusterating. Its not uncommon for me to go 3 days on less then 4 hrs of sleep. I start feeling a little drunk at that point though...
I've tried different medications. One thing I do that I find sometimes works is literally chewing 3 gravols at night. I know it sounds kind of gross, but you chew it with ur front teeth so the bitterness doesn't get stuck in the molars. I dunno why, but seems to work better then perscription stuff.

Well, no that's not totally true.

I've notice differences in hormone related drugs and triptans and although many doctors and most pharmacuetical companies won't admit there are differences between the brand and the generic, most are so slight that the masses won't note a difference.

MissFit, you can request that your doctor check the DAW (dispense as written) box on your script so the pharmacy will fill as requested and not default to the generic.

I'm not dissing generics btw - they are an affordable alternative.

I was "just" precribed Topamax to help me sleep also.
I have ALWAYS been a bad sleeper, and have always suffered from ADD, so when I lie in bed, my mind just "races" until I am forced to get up and do something.

It's the WORST.

Has the Topamax been working for you?

Sorry, I forgot to mention something ... Oh, yeah, you won't wake up groggy or have any bad side effects not unless you consider some very vivid dreams as bad but that will happen if you have been sleep deprived for a long, long, time!
