GAYS SHUN SUBURBS for the CITY....

The age old struggle between the City and the Country is still alive and well with gays right in the middle:

A new U.S. census report detailing the number and location of gay couples in metro Atlanta shows that partnered gays overwhelmingly choose to live intown.

About one in every 20 couples was gay in 2000. In the suburbs, fewer than one in 100 couples was gay.
The demographic report is part of the most accurate accounting of American gay couples ever produced. The figures on gay and straight couples are based only on partners and married couples living together in the same household.

Gay rights leaders have long claimed homosexuals constitute 10 percent of the American population. They cite landmark studies by Alfred Kinsey, who interviewed thousands of men and women on human sexuality in the 1940s and 1950s.

The census numbers tell us that gay couples are still mostly an urban phenomenon. Almost 12,000 gay couples live in metro Atlanta, and 44 percent of them live inside the Perimeter, compared with 13 percent of metro Atlanta's heterosexual couples.

When asked why intown areas are so popular with the gay community, gay residents voiced some common themes: Urban areas tend to be more accepting of gay culture than suburban or rural areas, and gays - who often have no children - are more willing to gentrify downtrodden areas with poor schools.

Gays often see the suburbs as intolerant of their lifestyle. "It's a bias based on the fear of being ostracized by neighbors or physically attacked," .

Many gays remember that in 1993 the Cobb County Commission passed a resolution condemning the "gay lifestyle" after Marietta's Theatre in the Square staged a production with homosexual themes. The resolution caused Olympic officials to pull the volleyball preliminaries from Cobb in the 1996 Games.

In sum, it looks like gays are more and more at the Center of American life----participating in the continued growth of our cities while many others, both gay and straight, continue to contribute to one of our greatest downfalls-----URBAN SPRAWL............
