I don't see anything particularly wrong with selecting a donor you want (or, genetically manipulating the embryo for that matter...) Just that... I was hoping that the underlying motivation was to enhance the quality of life of the child... Hmm... it is hard for me to believe that inducing a physical inhibition would make a better life.... but... who knows? Maybe... by going deaf you might gain something better... (somehow... I doubt it...)?

Well, really it comes down to - why bring a child into the world if you want to limit their abilities?

I wonder if these two women will ever tell their "child" that they made it that way on purpose. How would you feel, if you were
the kid? How would you like to know you were born with two strikes against you, because someone else thought you should be that way?

Just think, you can't talk on the phone. Music? What's that? You can't communicate with 99.9% of the people you encounter. Chances of having a child of your own is really low, because who wants to re-produce with a genetic lottery-loser?

So as you go through life wondering what a voice sounds like, or what's so great about CD's, or wishing just once you couid pick up the phone and not have to type words into it, you can thank your mom and other mom, who made you this way in some desperate attempt to recapture their youth.

I hope the children murder the parents.

i remember seeing a program years ago about a heterosexual couple who said they wanted their child to be deaf because they were for much the same reasons, they dont see it as a handicap.

now if they were to have a child, would it be any more or less acceptable?

they didnt handicap the child, the child was born that way because the father was deaf. because he is deaf, should he be witheld from donating his sperm

should his genetic makeup be used to prejudice his right to help other procreate? when a couple chooses a donor, one of the things they select is genetic traits/makeup....should this be any different? remember the child wasnt guaranteed to be deaf. how could you prove there werent other reasons for him being the donor

if they had knocked knees the old fashioned way would it be any different? if she had chosen a deaf mate in the knowledge heer child stood a 50% chance of deafness, is it any different.


i personally dont understand why they would take joy in bringing a child into the world who is sense-impaired, but ethically i dont think they should have been prevented in doing so

I am betting that even as a percentage, the incidence of abuse among same-sex parents is no higher (and probably lower) than that of mixed-sex parents.

To generalize about the behavior of either group on the basis of incidental reports is just poor analysis.
