one of my co-workers had the rouxen-y gastric bypass operaton done about 18 months ago. he has lost over 90 pounds!

he wants to start weight lifting and building up lost muscle mass. i wonder if he would be able to injest enough protein with his reduced stomach size now?

anyone have any info on this?

yes, he has to do that now because of his much smaller stomach capacity.

I have serious doubts that a person with gastric bypass can even consume adequate cals in the first place.

But you could advise them that the good fats like pb, olive oil, and fish oil will certainly help get the cals up. I mean eating oatmeal on a one ounce stomach would be stupid. Just don't get him eating so much PB that he can still get 4000 cals per day.

But mixing his whey protein shake with less water can help. You make it like pudding. So he could possibly get 25-50g right after lifting. The excess water in a normal shake would limit his intake.

he's pretty much fucked but I'm sure that was explained to him before he was butchered. If he can stretch out what's left of his pouch then he might be able to hold/absorb enough super dense liquid feed to build muscle but it's unlikely.

The gastric bypass is a disgusting proccedure, and doctors should lose their licences for performing it.. what's horrifying is how rapidly it's becoming acceptable (from celeb magazines and shows on TLC) as if it's some minor nip/tuck.

Unfortunately, everyone wants a quick fix to obesity. Its much easier to get the doc to cut you up, then to put in the time and effort dieting/exercising. I mean, if the operation doesn't work, you can blame the doctor. Who exactly can you blame if diet/exercise don't work?

I think he will have a very difficult time adding muscle. If he had that much weight to lose though, I don't think he's an aspiring bb'er. A simple routine should help him maintain the muscle he DOES have, while keeping the fat off.

I've seen the show "Big Medicine" quite a bit on TLC and think those two doctors are absolutely fucked in the head.

First most doc's won't do gastric bypass on people who are like 500+. I understand they are a huge risk for any surgery, but I would argue THOSE are the people that need the surgery. Not some women who is 220 or some 6'4 guy that is 300 pounds.

These docs both claim that obesity is genetic and the surgeries are an absolute solution. Because "diets" don't work. Well it's obvious to everyone on here that diets aren't the problem. It's the people doing the diets.

They even had his daughter which is the sister to the other doc (father/son team) have surgery for the lap band.

The girl was a size 14 for christ sake! Ok, bigger but not SURGERY worthy. They determined for her that she could never lose the weight on her own. Now she claims to be 135 and a size 4 but she don't look it. Still a pouch and turkey neck. Plus she had to fly from Cleveland down to Dallas so her brother could fix the lap band because apparently no one (NOT ONE DOCTOR) in Cleveland could figure out how to reduce the fluid in it. Yeah fucking right!

Anyway, that's my rant for today. If it's a life saving procedure, then cool do it. But for a cosmetic procedure it is horrible.

I think they are suppose to start exercising about a week after surgery. That would help save muscle mass.
