The civil war was about regaining FEDERAL control of Southern states who generally maintained much more independent governers and leaders than the North.
The south paid a HEAVY price for the war and their "defiance". Lincoln punished them severly.
The average southern had an income of roughly 80% of his northern counterpart before the civil war.. AFTER the war.. it dropped to 40%.
It wasnt until 1960 that it finally reached 80%.. 100 years of financial punishment!! that doesnt even take into account that much of the south and its provate porperty was destroyed.
the South, according to the constitution at that time had EVERY RIGHT to secede. Like it or not .. in 1860 the SOUTH was right. The North and the murderer Lincoln were wrong. Slavery as an institution is wrong but they were better ways to go about abolishing it than to use it as an excuse to prolong a war.
Mass centralization of the federeal governments powers started with the civil war and things have gone downhill ever since.
