This older guy about 48 years old is working out doing the squat machine, he is pretty big about 6'4 250 lbs and he is a roider. he is making these ridiculous noises like he is having a baby, im not talking about the normal grunts either........ im talking about loud, obnoxious noises.

i talk to him sometimes here and there and we know each other by name, anyway i kind of jokingly say "do you have to make those noises" i said it in a non serious tone.

well next thing you know he gets pissed off and starts getting all excited saying "oh I come to the gym for a release, and I shouldnt have to control myself for other people, I shouldnt have to listen to anyone half my age, people are so self concious etc" blah blah blah

does he have a right to disturb everyone in the whole fucking gym with is noises ? or was I out of place and being to critical ?

what do you think ?

Well, he is a dick for getting so mad, but then again, the roids will do that. I'd say you sounded pretty civil in how you approached it. I'm not sure if you got in a ninja stance though while you said it. Those ninja stances will give people the wrong idea 95% of the time. Then next thing you know you have like 8 dudes jumping out of the alley trying to jump your ass. Luckily you have your throwing stars and shaolin monk training to save you and make them all look foolish.

I get annoyed also by these types but generally there isn't really any way to approach them about it that isn't going to be taken wrong. You probably did the right thing though, hopefully he will be a little self conciouss next time he's shitting a horse while squatting.

I know what you mean. I think every gym has 2 or 3 of the "look at me and the weight I'm pushing". Fucking morons if you ask me.

I can overlook some grunting "IF" the weight being lifed is substantial. But what about those people who are hardly lifting any weight that feel like they have to make all those wierd grunting and straining noises (is this just in my gym)??

It must be for attention because it ain't because the weights heavy.

Exploiting the partial Valsalva manoeuvre while pressing heavy will often result in a vocalization. It might seem out of place in your typical Bally's but it's fairly common when people are lifting heavy.

It helps to focus one's effort and 'look at me' was probably the last thing on his mind. I think you were out of place and overly critical, based on what you've related.

Normally when executing a partial Valsalva maneuver, I expel air in a different direction. That can be quite vocal as well, and gets a lot of looks. :)

Chocolate squats and other close encounters of the turd kind are normal risks of gym work.

If he can squat more than you....then you can't say shit....It's the gym its about lifting weights......whomever can lift the most is in charge......

I too think you might have been out of place. I know i would have shrugged ya off w/o getting mad, but i would have been more concious, wich i dont want to do. Im there formyself. not you, so i can be as loud as i want to be. UNLESS the Gym owner asks me to stop.

BUT on the other hand, i dont grunt too much on Sqauts, but on the deadlift, i need that extra motivation of a real good grunt. Grunting helps me breather during the lift.

Kind of like the people that take up weights and equipment in pairs or groups so no one else may use them, or someone else's music, or DROPPING THE FUCKIN WEIGHTS ON THE MAT !

No, there is no ediquette in a gym, so get over it.

just crank up the music.

What I hate more, are the ones that start to grunt "after" the lift is over. start panting and grunting to show how much effort they put out

Whiskey
