Study: Teflon Frying Pans Release Host of Chemicals

By Ian Karleff

TORONTO (Reuters) - Frying eggs got a whole
lot easier when Teflon was invented in the late
1930s, but Canadian researchers warned on
Wednesday that the nonstick coating is releasing
chemicals into the environment that take
centuries to break down and whose long-term
effects are unknown.

Researchers from the University of Toronto
demonstrated that Teflon, a fluorinated polymer
created by E.I DuPont de Nemours & Co that is
commonly used to coat frying pans and other
cookware, degrades when heated. But although
Teflon pans are the source of potentially
harmful chemicals, cooking with the pans won't
kill.

A summary of their study is published in the
July 19 issue of the science journal Nature.

DuPont responded to the Nature article late on
Wednesday, saying in a news release: ``It is
misleading to link the study discussed in the
Nature article to any real-life conditions for use
of non-stick cookware.''
