Fruit

What role does fruit play in an athlete and weightlifters diet. Is fruit just good for giving energy? Does it have any other qualities like protein? I'm talking apples, peaches, pears, strawberries etc. My boxing coach says I should eat atleat one piece of fruit a day, preferably before I workout.

Fruit is good for energy while training before and after and during the middle. I always eat some bananas or grapes while training to keep my energy up. Fuit is not where you fing the protein, just the quick energy you need.

Fruit is basically just a source of carbs. You could get your carbs elsewhere if you wanted, or even just take spoonfuls of sugar. There are better sources of carbs than fruit.

But being a boxer, you probably burn so many calories a day that you need lots of carbs to maintain your physique & overall energy. So fruit, sugar, whatever is probably ok.

Big Mac Attack The fiber in it might help you shit a little better.

God damn it, I wanted to be the one who said that. Apples and other fruit will clear out your insides of shit. You cannot box well when you are full of shit. Try oatmeal with strawberries for really large turds, turds so big that you can make things out of them.

Apples, pears, and bananas are excellent.....stay away from the ones that are real high in sugar like grapes and raisens.....

Macronutrient wise, your looking at carbohydrates. They do provide fiber. An often overlooked attribute of fruit is their vitamin (and even some mineral) contribution to the diet.

There is a large and misguided anti-fructose group in the nutrition crowd that warns people not to touch any food with fructose. Don't listen to them. Fructose is a low glycemic sugar (an anomaly among sugars) which is excellent for replenishing liver glycogen. No sugar should be consumed in large quanities. In turn, don't go overboard with fruit.
