Friendly Fruit

I like to eat a piece of fruit after my lunch or for a midday snack...usually a gala apple, sometimes a banana and sometimes with some natty PB.

Can anyone suggest some good fruit choices as far as being lower cals, lower in sugar, very fiberous, etc. I'd like to keep one piece of fruit in my diet...

thanks!

okay, I realize that...I WANT to keep fruit in my diet. I'm not on an extreme, all-or-nothing kind of diet.

I consider fruit to be a "treat" and an alternative to chocolate, etcetera.

I think women, in particular, have so many hormonal changes and have read that some fruit will help curb cravings and promote an increase in other "feel good" hormones.

And please do tell me about the alternatives--I'm pretty adventurous!

Fruit is GREAT! Dont let anyone tell you different.

I like Pears, Especially Asian Pears, Plums, apples, oranges, Kiwi, and most berries.

Eating fruit is very filling and satisfying and in most cases burn like a complex carb. I never feel like binging when I eat plenty of fruits and have not had a problem cutting or maintaining really low bodyfat eating it.

Thanks for the suggestions Hansel.

Everything you listed sounds good...what do you think are the best choices--banana vs. apple, etcetera.

Fruit is all natural, sweet, tasty, satisfying and I think it helps keep me balanced. Burning it off isn't a problem...I know I do enough training and cardio to justify one piece of fruit a day. Sometimes it's just half an apple and a hard boiled egg in the afternoon for a snack. No biggie.

I eat several pieces of fruit per day, Ive noticed this board is tremendously biased when it comes to fruit, dont buy into it.

you can "burn" off alot more than one puny piece of fruit per day, and its not like all the fructose is hitting your system at once, thats the great part about fruit. It doesnt bloat me at all and in addition the the broccoli and nuts I eat keeps me quite regular, I dont really even use toilet paper anymore, clean sweep 90% of the time.

The fruits I listed are low-moderate GI compared to melons and bananas etc so I think those are the best choices. although its all low calorie its best to get the most fiberous ones. Apples and Pears are my favs diet and taste wise. Kiwi is easy to peel, cut the ends off and run a spoon around the skin to get it out in one piece.

Look for variations and cross strain fruits to mix it up. I Like Fuji's , Gala's, Pink Lady's, all kinds of apples and the Bosc and asian Pears are killer. you can find Tangelos to , which is a citrus cross strain youd prolly like.

I'm with ya.....just wanted to prepare you for what many people think...........I eat everything...in moderation, of course....

TMI...but very funny!

I'll try the different apples...Gala's are so seasonal in California--hard to get a good selection sometimes. If I remember correctly, Fuji's are a bit tart, but I'll try the Pink Lady's. I think I've had the Bosc pear...want to try the asian pear...sounds great! I used to put the tangelos in my salads with chicken and almonds and sometimes feta cheese. Great suggstions.

Sawastea, thanks...I was curious about the lower GI fruits. That is really helpful. Great link man! The article was a great read and put in terms that even I can understand!

I like to toss a banana and some PB in my Post w/o protein shake. Any reason why bananas are good for post w/o (other than to reduce/relieve cramps)?

bananas are not ideal PWO because they refill liver glycogen instead of muscle glycogen...Stay away from fructose PWO all together

A very ripe banana is mostly glucose with little fructose.

Best fruit is no fruit, but if you're going to still eat it either way you should know that fructose is 4x more likely to be stored in the liver and it's 4 x more likely than regular glucose to be stored as fat. having said that, peaches, apricots, cherries, banana, are all supposed to be "ok".

All kind of berries are certainly the best fruit : low GI, low carbs, full of vitamins and antioxidants

Apples, bananas, pears, cherries taste good but they are rich in carbs

Can you please translate for me...I'm just learning about nutrition right now.

Fructose is a monosaccharide (single sugar molecule) that combines with glucose to form sucrose (fruit sugar). When you injest fruit, all the sugars are broken down into their monosaccharide constituents (with the exception of cellulose) so for fruits, sucrose will be broken down into fructose and glucose. Fructose is probably the livers favorite sugar, so it is absorbed as soon as it hits the liver. Glucose can still circulate around the body via blood and can replete muscle glycogen (before being converted to fat by the liver). Fructose is stored in the liver and is used to produce liver glycogen (not too useful for lifting as muscle glycogen). Once the liver's glycogen stores becomes full it starts converting the sugars to fat. I think that's correct I'm not totally sure.

Don't fruits provide good antioxidant activity though? I eat about 1 apple a day but I'm exactly adhering to a strict diet regimen. Plus I probably burn an entire fruit walking to class =/.

I'm not understanding why people are so against fruit for?

A lot fruits are fibrous no? The actual sugar content is not all that high when one factors that in. And certain fruits (berries, etc)contains many antioxidants and vitamins and minerals.

Obviously don't go overboard with eating fruit, but I'm sure half an apple here and there won't hurt.

Yep...moderation is a good rule of thumb. Fruits are a great source of antioxidants and fiber. It sure beats eating anything processed...IMO.

PLUS...they supposedly help us ladies keep our cool when we're in a "delicate" state (one week a month)! ;)

Just some observational input

I can't remember the last time I heard someone complaint about getting fat off of fruit. "If it weren't for those damn apples I wouldn't be so fat!!!"

Perhaps those in a serious cutting phase for a competition might avoid some due to the carbs, but for normal people and general health, fruits are great.
