Friendly fire.........

Last night a british plane was shot down my friendly fire from US forces.........kinda sucks. Its especially bad after Gulf War 1 in which half of the brit forces that died did so as a result of friendly fire from US forces.

I wish peple would learn to look first and shoot second.........

I was just watching more about this on the news........it is very unlikely that the incident was due to a technical glitch and very likely that it was due to somebody getting 'overexcited'. 3 men are now missing because somebody probably got trigger happy.......not to mention that we are now one very expensive plane down.

As for why we are there.......I'm not sure. I think the WMD line was just a cover for Blair truly thinking that Saddam was too great a risk to his own people and the region in general to justify his existence.

The ironic thing is ---

in most US-led wars, MOST of the deaths come from US forces and friendly fire, plane crashes, and ship accidents and other incidents.

It's sad, but our troops need to be more careful about their own soldiers and aircraft -- not the other soldiers. Don't forget the 7 canadians that were blown away by a US jet, or the 20 americans that died in Afghanistan in various harrier/helicopter crashes.

I agree, they REALLY need to practice, and organize more and be more efficient if they're gonna go out in the field. Shooting down your own jet or allied jets (WHY the hell are the British there in the first place?? Not like the US does didly shit for the British anyways. Canada learned their lesson and stayed out of this one.) is ridiculous and pathetic.

this really made me sad and a little angry. i know they didnt mean to shoot down an allied plane but, damn it.......im sure there is procedure in place, doesnt it give of a transponder code or something?

Actually, they have now reported that the transmittor that distinguishes and allied plane from and enemy plane was not functioning.

There is no way in hell that someone is just going to let an unidentified plane fly in close without consequences.


I hope those three soldiers make it out alright in the end.

So why did it take them so long to announce that the transmitter was not working?

Surely the pilot would have told somebody the general direction of where he was heading?

What about visual confirmation?

Weren't the transmitters also the problem in Gulf War 1? Wouldn't they have sorted that out by now?

Possible......but he might also have financial reasons. I'm not comfortable with top tier politicians gaining extremely lucrative positions with very influential defense contractors when their public service has expired.

Gads.....anyone can see the blatant pitfalls in that.

Radio and visual inspection are used.........this is just a bullshit excuse used to keep the majority happy. The alliance is much stronger if good relations between allies can be maintained.

So you're saying ONE STUPID little $70 device is all the difference between a pilot's life and death????

What aobut RADIO? What aobut VISUAL inspection?

Who comes up with these stupid systems in place? This is ridiculous.

Even in the Gulf and Afghanistan war we lost HUNDREDS of fine young men due to our OWN fuckups -- missiles, ship accidents, helicopters colliding, etc. etc.

That's just stupid -- cuz all that can be avoided if even attention is paid to SAFETY and RELIABLITITY back home, and systems are better designed to AVOID these types of errors. Not everything has to be "let's focus on killing the bad guys". There's a lot more than just creating rambo-procedures.

You will see when all is said and done, that their identify beacon malfunctioned! And visual back up did not work! I have a feeling the Tornado also had communication problems! Combination of Technology and Human Error! Unfortantly this will happen more as the War continues!

OUR FORCES DIED FROM FRIENDLY FIRE AS WELL IN G.W.1. SOMETIMES, THE SUPER-TECHNOLOGY WE HAVE WORKS TOO WELL AS PROVED BY THE PATRIOT BATTERY SHOOTING DOWN A R.A.F. PLANE. FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND, IT HAD TURNED OFF ITS I.F.F. SIGNAL AS TO NOT BE DETECTED BY ENEMY RADAR WHEN ON THE MISSION.
