free weights vs machine

the gym i use has more machine than free weights due to the hurricane that happen a couple months ago. can you get the same effect with machine as free weights

If "same" is taken to mean "poor", sure; plenty of people manage to get bad results with both free weights and machines. But properly performed free weight exercises are far superior to any machine alternatives.

No, machines can't compare to free weights.....machines are better than being sedintary obviously, but when it comes to free weights, you simply cannot reinvent the wheel.

trendmit-

What freeweights do you have availible? Just as a 'for instance', yesterday I did my entire workout in a power rack. This was by design as I have any machine or free weight apparatus I could want at my disposal. All you need is a barbell, a rack/squat stands, and a bench (in that order) to get GREAT results.

they have a squat rack with the weights i will try to use that like you said hopefuly they will get things back shortly

thanks for the help

LMAO, I was wondering that too. Was it looters? It's easier to steal a plate than a machine.

That's the only explanation I could think of...although they'd have to be pretty desperate and/or machine-hating EF members. Even if the gym had some pretty nice plates/dumbbells, you'd think the weight:value ratio of free weights would make them a rather unattractive target.

My univeristy has like a 5:1 ratio of machiens to free weights. It's annoying.

I do what Guiness does- and do all my exercises in the power rack.

I will only move for those guys I know will squat dead or clean.

Anyways sometimes it more fun to make do with what you have.

Don't you just find it more fun to work with a hefty barbell? I see guys with two or three plates doing triceps pushdowns or with tiny dumbells on the preacher jobby with looks of anguish on their face and emitting tiny squeals. Where is the fun in that? Give me a big weight on my back or let me do a high-intensity pull and I'll demonstrate what a lifter's roar or grunt shoud sound like.
