Free standing heavy bags

Has anyone ever used one? I have no where to hang a traditional heavy bag in my home and was thinking of a free standing one like the centry wavemaster. Does anyone have any experience with these? Can I get close enough to box effectivly or is it better at kicking range?

The wavemaster is pretty decent the only problem is when you hit it the whole bag tends to move. Also not trying to brag but if you are a really hard heavy hitter like me the plastic shaft that holds the bag up tends to bend.

I have a wavemaster and it was really good at first, but I don`t like all the movement I`m getting. I have to slide the thing in place and it just slows down my flow when I`m working out.......

I agree; while the Wavemaster is probably the most well known free standing bag, it has it's major drawbacks.

I find the regular one I have fine for kicking, but it does move a fair amount. I'd also NOT recommend filling it with water----the weakest point is where the base meets the neck. Unfourtunately, this is also the point that takes the greatest amount of stress.

We've gone through about 3 in the past year at my TKD school; the heavy bag, which we've had for many years, is in fine form. In fact, the chain links holding it have had to be replaced, but the bag is fine.

Also, it may just be my wavemaster, but it's hell on the wrists; while I can pound a heavy hanging bag with no problem, the wavemaster made my wrists aches for weeks after a few sessions of un-wrapped punching.

If you have no option for a heavy hanging bag, a wavewaster is better than nothing, IMO.

I got the long body Bob - I got 250 pounds of sand in it and on a rubber mat. Seems to keep it more stable.

Thing is you can't hit it like a heavy bag. You got to hit it so your strikes hit it at the end of your strike.

I like mine for accuracy training. Its great to focus on knock out sweet spots, like on the jaw line and liver shots. Plus having it move around isn't a bad thing. It moves more like a person than a regular heavy bag. People sway and move at their top, people have their bases at their feet - just like a free standing bag.

I don't train exclusivey on one, but I like to switch up between regular bags and my bob. I use regualr bags for power training more, and bob for accuracy and speed more.

One thing that I just added is a slip bag. I have it in front of my bob. Its a 10 pound bag of sand that swings from the ceiling. It forces you to duck and slip while throwing strikes at the bag. A 10 pound bag of sand hitting you in the head hurts lol. I really don't know if I should even talk about this. I feel like its my secret training technique. It has helped my sparring defense 10 fold.

I just started training kickboxing about a month ago. I got Bob also to practice with and love it, still moves a little though when you hit hard. Good idea about the slip bag I will have to try that.
