1. the illegal trade you speak of was beng conducted by their government. this boycotting only hurts people over there, which is what levvies pressure to the president
2. i hope it simmers down and chiraq realises the enormity of the situation. wouldn;t you hate it if you were a vinyard owner who couldnt afford to feed his kids just because his country veto's a war he didnt give a toss about or worse still SUPPORTED?
3. worse still, what if france actually DID object to this on moral grounds. ok, the probably didnt but what if they refused to do the US's bidding because their people were aganst it....something they felt was a threat to world stabilty and was purely in america's self interest and now they get punished for it??
4. what if the boycott goes the other way? america is haemorraging $$$ in the middle east due to boycotts of mcdonalds, KFC, cola etc....you really want a heavily industrialised nation like France exploiting those weaknesses? what about your crippled airline industry? or the retailers that DEPEND on french imports in the US?
5. what message does this send to other allies, particularly the poorer ones? support us or be damned economically? France has lost a good ally for a good few years now....shouldn;t that be enough punishment?
1. yes, it was the government that had illegal ties, but so did private french businesses. by punishing their economy as a whole, the people should look towards the stance their government took on the issue, and punish them accordingly come election time.
2. i would be furious at my elected officials, and i would do my best to make sure they dont get re-elected.
3. they arent being punished by our government; they are being punished by its citizens. it is one thing if france decided to vote against it, but it is another thing to try and thwart us by threatening to veto it, and then taking it a step further to go visit other countries and try to get them to vote against us. not only that, but they also tried to further inspections by another coupls of weeks/months, because they knew it would be too hot to fight a war, and thus we would have to put it off for another year.
4. let france and some turd world middle eastern countries try and boycott us. i forgot how essential it is for a bunch of nomadic terrorists to buy our coke and big macs. let them buy their immitation coke with pictures of arafat on the can, i dont care. we export shit to pretty much every fucking country, so a bunch of piss poor middle eastern countries and some arrogant european country is going to do shit to us.
5. yes! i hope it sends a crystal clear message to other countries. if you dont help and support us, you better not expect shit in return. if other countries piss our country off, we should put them on a state dept shitlist, where they will remain until they start behaving more to our liking. why should we continue to help countries that stab us in our backs? fuck that shit.
