For those with a digital camera...

I am thinking about buying a digital camera. Up until now I have been a traditionalist shooting only film and developing it myself. I have been eveything from a sports photographer to shooting weddings and portraits. I have my eye on a high end Canon Digital SLR for the future on which I can use all my current lenses in that format. Anyway I am wondering what kind of digitals you all have. I am going to buy a decent little point and shoot but I want one with some creative control. Let me know what you have, what you like/dislike about it etc. Also would like to know max aperture, focal length of the lens and quality of photos you get from it if you don't mind. Thanks for the input.

The olympus Camedia E-10 lets you get creative i love mine.

RADAR

If you have Canon lens already go with a Digital Rebel...
$999 body only..

Then buy a cheap Olympus 3 mp for light weight tourist type shots..
I have an Olympus older model camedia 3.3 mp and love it..
Good Optics for a 3x optical zoom

Radar That is a nice SLR. More than I am looking for right now. At that price I was looking at the new Digital Rebel and EOS 1D. Basically I am looking for a decent point and shoot. The Olympus Stylus 410 has some control decent aperture and the weather resistant is a nice feature as well. I just hope they don't have the same issues with the front door/lens cover as the film versions do. BTW how do you like Olympus lens quality for sharpness? Do you get decent edge to edge sharpness or is there blurring near the edges?

That is what I am planning, just wanted some feedback on point and shoots for now. Just getting my feet wet in the digital world. I am going to go check out the stylus 410 to see if i like it. Also want to look at a Canon s500 Digital Elph though I have heard it has a very short battery life.

Nope its super sharp, another plus it keeps the high resolution for doing micro photography, Ants, Jewelry, etc.

Interstingly, the macro functions on the E-10 and Stylus are very similar. Both close focus to 8" but I would bet the E-10 has a higher quality though. It all comes down to lens quality. Thanks for the input Radar, I appreciate it.

i've got a sony cybershot and i'm satisfied with it.

i dunno bout fstops and all that stuff, but on the lens it says f=5.0mm 1:2.8. zoom wise, the canon sure shot i have has a 115mm zoom on it and it's a bit better zoom than the sony.

the sony has more features than i really know what to do with.

oh yeah, it does video with sound and i can hook it directly into my VCR's AV jacks for picture review OR can make home made porn and tape it on the VCR instead of my memory stick. don't ask me how i know that though ;)

only downside to the model i have is the largest pics i can get out of it are 640x480.

Olympus Stylus :
Manual Focus : No
Aperture range : F3.1-F5.2
Max Shutter : 1/1000 sec
LCD pixels : 134,000

Pentax Optio S4 :
Manual Focus : Yes
Aperture range : F2.6-F4.8
Max Shutter : 1/2000 sec
LCD pixels : 84,000

Thanks Res, got all that info so far I was looking for what people thought who owned one. Optio has some good points and I am kind of leaning towards it, I guess I should get off my lazy butt and try them both out.

I have the Canon SD100 love it tiny and it has all the bells and whistles eventualy I would like to get a digital SLR as well. I killed my last SLR :(

I have both film and digital Olympus camera and the lens quality
is very sharp and relatively fast for a Consumer type price..
The Olympus Camedia is faster than most on the save/recycle time
and the auto fucus is also fast..

Don't go too small on the physical size as cramming all that electronics
into a tiny pkg tends to cause problems.

If I was buying a point and shoot today, I'd look for this one.. or the 750 UZ

Above from my favorite review site..
Has actual pictures taken with the cameras for comparison of
temp, exposure etc..

I have a Sony DSP-9 or something... 5 mega pixel...

Nice Camera... great pictures, etc.

Thing is... unless I can put it in my pocket, I won't have it when I need it most. And I am really annoyed by things in my pocket like keys, etc. I have one of those Casio Credit Card cameras as well.. and it gets way more use. The quality is more than good enough for the snapshots I like to take, etc. Can't complain.

Sony has a new ultra slim one out too... but I need to see it in person. I know it isn't quite as slim as my casio.. so I will probably wait.
