I am trying a new cardio regime starting this week. Instead of my usual 5 min walking warmup then running as long as I can, usually about 20-25 mins, then walking on an incline for another 10 mins, im gonna try something new. I will walk for 5 mins, then sprint for 5 mins, walk for another 5 mins then sprint for 5mins, do this about 3 times. anyone ever try this?

I have been using that system for a while now and it seems to be working out pretty well. My girlfriend does a similar one except it is more like sprint for 1 minute, walk for 9 holding side, get frustrated and go get changed, meet me outside the gym with an icecream cone in her hand.

Actually Wayne Gretsky used to do something similar. b/c of hockey being a sprint for the 30 seconds to 1 min your on the ice he used to jog for a couple mins, then sprint for 30-1min, then jog for a couple mins etc.

I did this for awhile and man it really does increase your short sprints.

Howver to burn calories the idea is to get your heart rate a contstant high lvl. The fluctuatuion wouldnt be the best way to burn IMO.

I was running with a heart rate monitor – I kept my heart rate up in the 160 level – running 4-5 miles a day, 3 – 4 days a week.
The thing is, I had good endurance but I would get winded running up stairs.
I got a new treadmill and my heart rate monitor wont work – must be electrical interference. I started to do sprints – running 1-2 mins and jogging 2 mins. Now I am able to recover faster – my heart rate will go down noticeably faster.

i like using 30 sec sprints 60 second cruise on and off after a 5 minute warmup

im sure you have seen some of the studies that show this keeping the metabolism boosted for up to 24 hrs and helps build legs muscles up (if using legs on the cardio) sorry no time to find the studies

im an athlete and love this for sports endurance but i did notice more fat loss and less muscle loss then when i would warmup then just run/bike HARD for 30-45 mins.. take it for what its worth..

good luck
