Car goes on sale in August or September, that's an official photo so it's too late for them to change their minds.

I wonder if the base model will also have a console, floor shifter, and bucket seats? Aren't there a lot of conservative middle-America buyers who still want a bench seat and column shifter? Or are all those people retired and dying now?

Even the current generation base Malibu is a good value. Some say it doesn't compete favorably with the Camry/Accord/Altima, but realistically it's priced to compete with Corolla/Civic/Sentra. The base model's MSRP is about $17,900 and with rebates and a little dealing you can easily get that to $15-16k. And it comes loaded with AT, power, and cruise control standard.

The 2.2l Ecotec powerplant is a proven reliable platform and "real world" mileage oftens exceeds the old EPA estimates. Many have approached 40 mpg in the Malibu.
