footwear...?

New member
are there a better pair of shoes to use for training...?

are there specialty shoes to wear for doing squats / deads...?

i normally wear basketball shoes to train, but am considering something else...

what makes the difference between the shoes...?

Olympic weightlifting shoes are the best thing I've ever purchased for lifting. Thye elevate the heel somewhat, and the heel is made of wood so there is no compression while squatting. I think these things are worth noticable poundage on my squat. I wear 'em for everything but deads. If I'm gonna deadlift I just take my shoes off.

Glenn Pendlay sells Oly shoes pretty cheap (something like $80 shipped I think).

#1 most important thing is to wear something comfortable. :-)

I prefer using Crosstrainers because they have a bit wider base and allow more range of motion in the ankles for calf raises and squats. BB shoes should work fine too. I've seen guys using wrestling shoes which may give added foot strength since wrestling shoes have very little padding and require a little more work to keep your balance/stability. But you also have the best ROM in the ankle and toes.

Yes there are special shoes you can get for squatting that have like a wooden heal to give more stability when you go down, but I've never seen or used these before.

chucks for a wide stance squat or deadlifts. i wear them for general gym use. i have a pair of OLY shoes too, that I use for oly lifts (snatch, cleans, high bar squats).

Why no shoes for deads?
I wear cross trainers for everything. Tried basketball hightops but they sucked when doing calves.

well, i can take my shoes off at my gym for deads...

why DON'T i want that heel for deads...?

You don't want a heel for deads because it pitches you forward - deads should be 'pushed' through your heel. I prefer to be shoeless for deads because any thickness from the shoe is extra distance the bar has to travel. Wrestling shoes work well for this if you can't take your shoes off, but wrestling shoes are a BITCH to put on. I just slip my shoes off, do my set, then put 'em back on - no harm done.

Seriously, don't waste your money on cross trainers if you're specifically looking for weightlifting footwear; it'd be like putting all-season tires on a car you plan to drive at the track - sure you CAN do it, but they're not the best tool for the job. If you do BB/Oly-type squats get Oly shoes (and they're great for OHP, RDLs, pretty much any lift done standing other than deads really). If you do lots of wide PL squats get Chuck's. Or get both. But as it pertains to weightlifting, crosstrainers are nowhere near the best choice. The idea is that you want good 'contact' with the floor. Crosstrainers are designed partly to absorb shock, which is good for running but bad for supporting a heavy weight and transmitting nervous sytem feedback to the brain.

is there anything somewhere in the middle...?

i don't want to have to change shoes at the gym, and don't want to be driving to the gym in clogs... ;)

Otomix are pretty good/very flat for most lifting & great for deadlifts. I change into Adidas Ironworks for squats (same shoes that Odd Hogan wears :verygood: )

i train in combat boots

for deadlifts, I just take 'em off

combat boots are the GREATEST for calves, since you can dig the thick tread into the platform, and not worry about your feet sliding.

well, i got a couple pair of Puma's with a flat sole, to use for squatting / deadlifting...

we'll see how these work out for a few weeks...

Ditto...

Another vote for Chucks. They are the best all gym shoe period. Plus you can get them in almost any color.

One of these days I am getting a platform/bumper plates for the basement and Oly shoes will be part of the purchase,

well, i wore the Pumas around here for about an hour...

they're going back...

the soles are too narrow and will probably lead to balance issues... gotta look for something with a wider sole... like a skate shoe maybe...

Without exception, EVERY Olympic weightlifter wears Oly shoes. They are the BEST you can do for lifting, unless you're doing deads or PL squats. I don't know how to be more clear than that.

well, i can't see myself walking around in the gym in Oly shoes...

so i'm gonna keep looking for something else...

i wouldn't be caught dead in Chucks either... too many flamers wear those things in this area...

I guess that when image is more important than results...

When I go to the local gym here people know me as many things...
1) The guy who has a gym bag.
2) The guy who puts that white powder on his hands when he trains.
3) The guy whose clothes don't color coordinate when he trains.
4) The guy who makes grunting sounds and talks to himself before a set.
5) The guy who wears sport shoes, OLY shoes, and Chucks all in the same workout.
6) The biggest guy that they have ever seen.
7) The strongest guy that they have ever seen.

I really don't understand what the problem is with oly shoes...I mean, other than looking slightly "stiff" they look just like a regular shoe. And....if your that worried about what other people think, why are you there in the first place?

wow, uptight much...

i already explained i'm not going to change shoes in the gym... i have 1 hour to train, so i have to get in do my shit and get the fuck out... i don't have time to be fucking around changing shoes and equipment...

i don't expect you to even read this post though, as you should now be ignoring me... so :finger:

Fair enough - my reaction was a bit rude to be sure. But still, it's annoying to help someone out, explain things in detail, then have 'em basically sya "I'm just gonna do the opposite of what you said". WHy ask a question if the issue's a foregone conclusion alreday?

Seriously, it takes all of 30 seconds to change shoes so I don't see why that'd be an issue. You could do it after your first wamrup set and it wouldn't eat into training time at all.

you said that the Oly shoes are not good for deadlifting as well...

when i get in the gym i do 10 mintues of cardio warmup, and then get right into it... i have a limited amount of time on Tuesday and Thursday and every minute counts...

no hard feelings... just looking for something that i can use all around... for cardio, and all my lifts...

:fro:

if i can rework my schedule to allow me an extra 15 minutes of time, i might go ahead and try out a pair of Oly shoes... i already carry a huge ass gym bag, so there is plenty of room in there for some shoes... ;)

if you squat ATF you'll love Oly shoes. for all around shoes, I like my chucks with an insole insert. those 2 make up my gym shoe collection.

Yep, I think it depends on how important it is for you to control all the variables. Cross-trainers were OK when I wasn't ATF squatting. In fact they were just fine for deadlifting too.

Now I carry both oly shoes and flat soled shoes in my gym bag. When I ran Korte where you squat and dead on the same day, I wore my oly shoes because ATF squatting was (is?) the bane of my existence, and I was able to dead alright even with the slight forward pitch.

Don't wear shoes with cushion's or air soles, when doing things like squats deads powercleans ect.. any lift that envolves keeping your feet on the floor. As cushion'ed shoes absorb some of the power away from your feet.

Is there a study or reference to read why not to wear shoes while squatting or deadlifting....i dont wear any when i squat...but wasnt aware that i shouldnt either while deadlifting.....alot of people ask or make a comment about the bare feet..but i cant really explain to them why or give them a reference.

just purchased my first set of Chuck's on ebay, mono black. Ive heard great things, im sure they are leaps and bounds better than wrestling slippers ive been squatting in.

they give a nice solid base, flat low sole, and good support on the base for if you spread the floor with your feet.

I prefer a thin sole for squats and deadlifts. I used to use my other shoes on days when I wasn't squating or deadlifting but those days have become rare.
