Flax affecting KetoStix results???

I started ckd on tuesday a.m. and last night I tested myself to see if I had made it into Ketosis. The reading was purple! Needless to say I was pleased. I went to the gym yesterday afternoon, Back and Traps, and ran 3miles@75-80% of my max heart rate. I figured that's how I got into Keto! When I came home from the gym that afternoon I tested myself and nothing, not even a trace. I had my post work out meal and some flax. An hour later, the test was deep purple so I was wondering if the flax had something to do with the test results????Any thoughts? mike

No, it's because you had burned all of the circulating ketone bodies through exercise.

The ketostix only measure the excess ketones in urine - so if you've burned the excess - the sticks won't turn purple (even when you're still in ketosis).

After a meal, you'll generally have spillover (i.e., the sticks will turn purple).

Stryc-9 brings up a good point. Back when I was doing strictly Atkins and had access to ketstix, I noticed that I would turn the sticks different colors at different times of the day. At first I thought it was Aspartame but after looking into it I came to the conclusion that it was because I had finshed running or doing some other form of activity shortly before.

First, let me assure you flaxseed oil has NOTHING to do w/ negating ketosis. Now, let's look at the reason why you were not in ketosis: A ketogenic dieter has two ways of Ketone measurement: blood and urine. When there are ketones in the blood it's called Ketonemia and when there are ketones in the Urine it's called Ketonuria. You can have ketones in the blood 100% of the time, but ketones in the Urine are basically the ketones that did not get used by the body. Thus, after the workout you used all the ketones for fuel and none were excreted through the urine and that is why your ketostix showed negative ketosis. I assure you , you were still in Ketosis - Ketonemia, with ketones in the blood.
