Five Greatest Metal Albums of All Time

hamstershaver said:
huh? i got it as my first pick

OOPS sorry bro!! In fact, you deserve karma!! You got both "reign in blood" AND "south of heaven". I really wanted two slayer albums on my list, but that would be a little predictable for me . . .

"The Number of the Beast" is almost always listed as well and I never could figure that out. Don't get me wrong I love the album and it does have my all time favorite song (Hallowed Be Thy Name) but I think the next two were better.

I agree. I really like Killers -- as a guitarist the riffs are great!! They simplified things ala judas priest and the rest of the british wave with number of the beast, but then they started to use the new technology creatively. So "Number" was kind of the low point of a "U" from my perspective. The first album is awesome. I just wish it had been better produced.

It's so hard to pick just 5..I have prolly 15 I consider metal even though alot of others might consider them hard rock so I just put what I thought others could see as top metal albums. Here is another list of my personal favorites from alot of groups I like.

Accept "Balls to the wall"
Scorpions "Savage Amusement"
UFO "The wild, the willing and the innocent"
Saxon "Power and the Glory"
Iron Maiden "Killers"
Judas Priest "Stained Class"
Black Sabbath "Mob Rules"
Def Leppard "Hysteria"
MSG "Assualt Attack"
AC/DC "Highway to Hell"

As you can see I am more into the European Metal of the late 70's through the 80's.

Balls to the Wall has one of the greatest metal guitar riffs of all time. I agree with the Powerslave. I would definitely go with Piece of Mind over Number of the Beast. Kudos to all for picking quality albums. Metallica's zenith was definitely Master of Puppets, or And Justice for All. I really think Justice was better. It raised the bar on bone crushing drum, and guitar sounds that to this day hasn't been topped. I saw them on the 1st show of the Black tour, and they poked fun at Justice, and only did a medley of songs...other than One. (weakest cut on the record) Look at them now!

You think so? I don't know man, no offense of course, but when I first started learning about sound engineering and production it became quite clear how bad ...And Justice sounded. The drums have no power, they click more than they thump, and the guitars sound ultra thin.

From an audiophile stand point it's a bad sounding record. The music is still awesome though, and I agree, it's their best album. Of course, these are just my opinions, interpret them as such.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned a Celtic Frost album yet. They certainly did a lot to influence Euro metal. If I had more room I would've had one up there.

Some could even call DF's Hysteria as AOR.

Top five in no particular order:

Iron Maiden - "Powerslave"

No particular order, huh POWERSLAVE? :p

I am listening to "Powerslave" right now ("Flash of the Blade" this exact sec), and that's a really good album! That is probably Iron Maiden's musical best IMHO. "Piece of Mind" might be their best album, in a cohesive sense. I like "Killers" because it was the seed of all metal. It's all in there . . . pulled out piece by piece over time.

I like your choices too Flah. Both Napalm Death and Celtic Frost are interesting thoughts.

Flah my brotha! You must be listening to Justice on a Craig Powerplay man. I agree, that the toms sound weak, and the snare sounds thin, but the kickdrum....I know it's a trigger but it sounds killer in a car with good subs and lots of juice. The guitar sound is harsh, and brutal. I guess my point was more that after Justice, every "thrash" band was trying to emulate the overall sound that was captured on that album. It was a very much copied sound in the genre that was then known as thrash metal. A genre, that like hair metal, has pretty much gone by the wayside. SCOOP THE MIDS ON THOSE GUITARS MAN!

Yeah, the kickdrum does have some nice low end to it. I agree with you there, the sound was copied by a lot of people after that record.

Jeeze, I mean, even today, listen to the new Suffocation. The guitars are buzzed way out and the double bass cuts through everything.

Hit me up on the AIM man, let's talk about drum tones! That goes for anyone else too, let's get some music discussions going.
