EAT YOUR HAT
You would think people wouldn’t want to buy something famous for coming out of an elephant’s rear end.
Alex Tilley feels otherwise.
Tilley makes outdoors apparel. About 10 years ago, an Ontario zookeeper told him that an elephant ate his Tilley hat, which later came out the pachyderm’s other end — soiled, but otherwise unscathed.
“He washed it off, and put it back on,” Tilley says. “It was good as new.”
This quickly became company legend. “Our people started mentioning it as a joke. Then, we started using it in testimonial ads,” Tilley says. “It turned out to be a fantastic selling point.”

The zookeeper, Michael Hackenberger, refused to allow his elephantized hat to be put on display at the Tilley Endurables company museum. Bowmanville Zoo officials in Ontario say he’s still wearing it, and that the same elephant, which resides at another zoo, swallowed the hat at least three times.
“For advertising purposes, we tried to film an elephant swallowing one of our hats,” Tilley says. “We couldn’t get the elephant to do it. We even doused the hat in beer.”
Now the company is having a write-in campaign, promising prizes for the best new slogan. An early candidate: “Wear the hat an elephant shat.”
