Firewalls...

Computer folks: I just got a cable modem which will mean I'm always on line. I need to get a firewall to protect my precious porn collection. I don't want Norton or McAfee. BlackIce has been recommended.

Any other suggestions? Happy? If you're out there lurking, pm me. I'd like your input.

Very true. For home use behind a cable modem the free ZOne Alarm download is far and away the winner. Its security has even beat some of the higher costing systems. I have Zone Alarm, and I also have Black Ice Defender. For home use, go with Zone Alarm. As Natty said, its free and it works.

While I agree with you on that, I would say that there are a tremendous amount of Hackers that are not looking to get stuff OFF your CPU, they are looking to put something ON your CPU.

Most large virus's that are spread get that way by being placed on numerous cumputers all over the place, anywhere a hacker can get into. That way as they track down the source it never gets back to them.

The last thing I need, is cops coming to my pad to check it out. Going through my computer and tracing my history. I use evidence eliminator to wipe that out, but you can never bee too safe.

well, evidence eliminator is not fool proof kronk i hope you know that, there is still logs floating around your computer....pm me for details on that...

however what kronk says is true, alot of times its just young teenage kids passing around viruses, or using your system with you knowning it such as back orifice.

zone alarm works well, but it bogged down my system, but as there guys say, its a solid product. You're more likely to be a vicitm of a virus infection than a hacking.

agreed that's why I'd say to get a virus protection package, then maybe a firewall. firewalls are over kill, there are some simple things you can do to harden you system. sure its not totally hack proof, but a good hacker can get through most any "home" firewall package anyway.

Get a linksys router. You can put multiple PC's on your broadband connect and it's a hardware firewall.

lol, I didn't say that I was a good hacker. firewall appliances are much better than software firewalls, but if you really want to see how good you firewall is you can always go to some hacker chatboards and challenge them to see if they can hack your firewall. I wouldn't do it.

For free, well you get what you pay for and ZA has a nice computer-illiterate following. Which has it's ups and downs:
easy to use. Poor rating from SANS. Good documentation. Boys at DefCON trash it daily. blah blah blah.
