Finishing Basement

I need some ideas...I want to look liveable...and and a place for me.....I need to build a workout room...game room...bar area...and play area...and living area. Anyone have pics of their finished basements.

I have a feeling this could get expensive.

Watch HGTV channel.
They've got lots of shows on redesigning basements.
There was one couple of days ago called "Mission: Organization"
There was another on DIY.

HGTV rules 2nd only to FOOD NETWORK in my book..

Only thing is I can't stand the Fem dude on Design on a dime, but the chick that always does the sewing has a nice rack and butt.

On one episode of trading spaces they redid the basement as a playroom for a little girl and had these cool rotating doors on poles to separate and hide the laundry area I think.

Hmmm...How handy are you? Do you like to Sheetrock? Can you do your own electrical and plumbling?

If you can do all of those; the sky is the limit pretty much...because it will save you a ton of money.

I finished off the basement at my old house...it was a learn as I went kind of experience. I am now up to my eyeballs at the new house finishing off the basement.

Seeing that you are an engineer..you must have access to Auto-Cad..or Arch-Cad software. They are great planning tools.

Good Luck!!

My budget will probably be aroubd 15K give or take.

I'm undecided if I should go with a oak drop ceiling, or something more "modern". I was contemplating a oak bar or granite. I have no clue what I want to do with the walls. Our basement is about 2700 sq. feet, so maybe I should a different thing in each room....right now it is open and only carpeted.

I can quite a bit myself...it is already plumbed for a bathroom...I'd have to run something for the bar though. I'm not the handiest guy, buy my friend is a carpetner and lives right next store so he can help.

Toga...I plan on doing my layout in 3D....so I should have a good idea what it will look like once I decide what I want. Do you work in the design field? Have any pics of your basement....I'd love to see them.

I just finished my dad's basement this year (well me, my brother, and my dad). We worked on it for 2 summer's straight and off and on during the rest of the year. FINALLY we are finished!!

We did EVERYTHING ourselves... studs, drywalling, electrical, plumbing, tiling, laminate flooring (cheaper alternative for us), finishing trims, etc, etc, etc

Our basement is around 1500 sq. ft.

We were going to go with a drop ceiling but our basement is not very tall so that would have infringed on our headroom.

Some basic recommendations is to go with potlighting and sconces and take into consideration your ceiling height if you plan on doing the drop ceiling. Also take into consideration the potential need for subflooring, which will further reduce head space.

The ceiling is 9 foot, so I'm thinking about dropping 6-13 inches. The house is only 4 years old, so I don't think a sub floor is needed.

Do you know what it costed?

Please..... no oak.

Oak is the ugliest of all woods.

How "finished" is it already? My basement is all cement and brick, so I would have to frame out the basement walls and put up sheet rock. I would primer and paint them, fuck paneling

Do you have any water valves or electrical connections in the basement? Just make sure you have some door covers to those, so it's easier to get to if there is a water or electrical problem.

$15K is a good chunk of money, especially if you plan on doing alot of the work yourself. If you need to do any plumbing or electrical work, kiss it goodbye.

Maple, Cherry, Pecan... much nicer woods (and flavors).

The grain in Oak is way to strong. Its an old man wood.. Grandpa's love that shit. The ones I listed are much more contemporary.

Don't forget the stripper pole... DOT will need that when he comes over to dance for ya.

I love the look of Bamboo flooring. I have expensive taste though....
