Today in the gym the most exciting thing happened (at least for me anyway). While I was working in with an older man on the deadlift he was telling me how he used to be a powerlifter back i think it was the 60s and 70s and broke many records in his day. I was pretty excited about talking to an elite powerlifter of another generation and see how things have changed and such.
He tells me that he noticed when I squatted I had very good form and also the deadlift and that I should join a powerlifting fed.
He then asks me what my training is like and I tell him that I'm following a generic routine by Bill Starr. He immediately looks at me and asks me how the hell I know who Bill Starr is. He then goes into saying that Bill Starr held a record (I think it was the deadlift) and that he was the one who broke it.
I'm just amazed somebody knew about Bill Starr because he's the first person I've met that actually knew who he was.
I then ask him if he knows Louie Simmons and he said something about chains and bands and that he never really got into that sort of stuff because it wasn't around at the time.
The whole point i'm trying to get at is that this is the first person that actually knew the proper squat depth, deadlift form, etc, etc and it's very different from the normal people that put on 225 and squat 1/4 of the way down.
Any of you have experiences like this?
