Name your favorite director, and favorite movie (doesn't have to be by the same director) and tell us why.

Federico Fellini,
The Bicycle Thief by Vittorio De Sica

La Strada by Fellini is a quick second

8 1/2 by Fellini, sorry but i had to throw it in.
most excellent piece of art ever....

why? because the man is pure genius. i highly doubt any director can top the moral significance he covered.

good thread! hmm, this is gonna be tough. i'm into a lot of movies. i'm going to have to go with richard kelly's donnie darko. you can watch it countless times and get a different perspective of it each time without getting bored.

dude, the book was so much better

but you are right about noticing more, the guy in the orange jumpsuit when donnie asks gretchen about making out for the first time with him is actually a member of the aviation society sent to spy on donnie.

my fave movie is apocalypse now, i dunno who directs what so i cant really answer that part of the question

Older directers: Akira Kurasawa

Newer directers: Clint Eastwood

Both for the same reason they were/are visionary yet simplistic.

Favorite movie: It's between Braveheart and Gladiator.

It's hard to say but probably Seven Samurai it's amazing. Ran is epic but really long. Yojimbo and Sanjuro are awesome too. So many movies have been made that are updates or tributes to his films.

puddles told me this is his favorite movie,

This is an unpossible question to answer. However I am quite surprised you've seen The Bicycle Thief (indeed,a great film)...are you taking a film appreciation class? :)

lol! no, i want to be a director someday, so i'm watching 1-2 films a day instead of sleeping in my free time so i can learn more. i'm known for going to the school library and taking out ten foreign films at a time. started doing this like a month ago though so i have a lot of catching up to do. im currently watching a lot of luis bundel flicks.

LOVE Bunuel!!
La Voie Lactee/Milky Way, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, and Un Chien Andalou are some of my favourite films.
I am a big surrealism nerd, and love film and art from that era, like Fernand Leger's Ballet Mechanique (cinematographer- Man Ray)
I took an Italian Cinema class in university, and remember really liking 1900 (Novecento) by Bertolucci.
As far as newer films/directors:
Wim Wenders-Wings of Desire
Michael Mann- Thief
Robert Rodriguez- El Mariachi, Desperado, From Dusk till Dawn

Iggy, are you tryin to put together a film class final???

also

"Snatch"
that is all

OMG
how could I forget Battle Royale???? (Kinji Fukasaku)
It blew my mind.

huh? i'm asking my friends the same questions about film too just to compare different peoples film tastes. and i wanted to see how many people actually new famous foreign directors, famous old films, ect.

although, this scene has to be the best in film history.
cagney was the best screen actor ever to live.
lets see anyone out act this.
the director and extras didnt even know he was about to do this.
he did it on spot.

That's a great idea to watch, but you should be out shooting. You want to have as much practical experience as you can get.

She started out as a dancer and moved onto experimental filmmaking. Meshes of the Afternoon is considered a masterpiece, and she, the Mother of Avant garde filmmaking. Also take a look at Rituals in Transfigured Time, another great work, imo. :)

A movie I like a lot too is Black Orpheus, (if you like Greek legends mixed with non-stop Brazilian music and dancing)
I forget who directed it

Nice, I'll try to find those ones.
Who are your faves BB?

I love contemporary or experimental interpretations of myths. I'll have to get ahold of this.:)

That's a good one.

Someone mentioned Apocolyse Now. That's a great film as well. Effete film snobs still snub it, but it's truly one of the greats.

John Huston's very last film (Angelica was in it) was a beautiful, simple little film no one ever mentions.

The Grapes of Wrath was a good one. Henry Fonda is grossly underappreciated as one of the greats.

On The Beach, a post-apocolyptic film from the late 50's was very good too. Very sophisticated and nuanced with a well developed female character.

I always thought the Oresteia would make a great three-part blockbuster series if it was done well, and in a contemporary style...
My favourite class in school was Greek mythology.

i gotta get a camera first bluebird.
getting one in a week anyways.

i have short films basically written already.
i just need to teach my friends how to act like cagney. (which will be hard)

Huge John Waters fan here, who could forget "Pink Flamingos" and "Hairspray"?

Enlist some drama students.:)

Its hard for me to chose a favorite movie or filmmaker, but here is one example that is at the top:

Both of them from Aronofsky.
